To Students, Faculty, and Staff,
On Friday, April 25, multiple news outlets reported that Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Carilli informed a federal court in Washington, D.C. that federal officials are beginning work on a new system to review non-immigrant statuses. He explained that during this transition some of the student records that had been terminated from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database would be reactivated.
As of today, we are pleased to inform you that ten of our eleven affected students and recent graduates have been reactivated in the database. They may continue their studies at UMass Boston or their Post Completion Training Programs. We are working diligently to continue to best assist these individuals. UMass Boston has a long-standing and deeply held commitment to supporting our international students, who are an essential part of our vibrant, diverse academic community. We stand firmly with them and will continue to advocate on their behalf, provide resources, and offer compassionate guidance during this challenging time.
While we recognize this positive development, we acknowledge that there is still considerable work to be done, and we must remain vigilant in our efforts to protect our community and our mission and values. The emotional turmoil these federal governmental actions has caused our fellow community members cannot be minimized or easily undone. We will continue to extend our support services to these impacted individuals and our entire community.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco
