Ten former foster youth students surprised with guaranteed income
In a heartwarming display of community support, 10 Sacramento State students from the Guardian Scholars program for former foster youth received an unexpected gift at the United Way California Capital Region's recent gala. The students will each receive $500 a month for a year through the organization's new Collegiate Guaranteed Income Program, providing critical financial assistance to help them focus on their education and achieve their dreams.
Guardian Scholars supports students who have experienced the foster care system, and the guaranteed income program will help ease the challenges, such as food and housing insecurity, that often hinder their academic success.
“This groundbreaking partnership with United Way reflects our community’s deep commitment to empowering these resilient scholars and ensuring they have the resources to not just survive but thrive on their academic journeys,” said Sac State President Luke Wood, himself a former foster youth.
