UCLA VRP to Argue before CA Supreme Court in Bianco Stolen Ballot Case

The California Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments for August 24, 2026, in San Francisco in Cervantes v. Bianco to determine whether Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco violated the law by seizing and counting ballots cast in the 2025 General Election. Under California law, ballots must remain in the custody of the County Registrar of Voters at all times. 

VRP Files Emergency Petition with Texas Supreme Court Challenging Galveston County Mid-Election Map Changes

After the March primary election was conducted under the original map, Galveston County changed District map boundaries for voting in November, which is against Texas law. VRP Senior Staff Attorney Bernadette Reyes states that, "When officials redraw districts in the middle of an election, it threatens both equal representation and confidence in our democratic process. Our lawsuit asks the court to protect those fundamental rights and principles." Read more here...

VRP Senior Voting Rights Advisor Xavier Becerra Leads Press Conference on Importance of Democracy Protection in CA

On August 5, Secretary Becerra led a press conference on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento alongside Senator Sabrina Cervantes and dozens of voting rights and democracy advocates, stating that now is the time to stand up and defend democracy: "We understand democracy lives and dies on the vote, and we want democracy to thrive!" UCLA VRP Team Participates in Advocacy Day in Support of the Cervantes California Voting Rights Act of 2026

The California Attorney General has the authority to present a summary for Prop 39 that is accurate and appropriate. VRP faculty director Matt Barreto explains to State Affairs:

“Having the office of the Attorney General weigh in with an independent title and summary is the best way to ensure that any proposition on the ballot is accurate and reflects exactly how it will impact the state and voters.... and in my review, the authors of Proposition 39 are misleading and mischaracterizing the issue," Barreto said.
