July 2023 — Moving the Needle | Woods Fund Chicago
Woods Fund Chicago is seizing opportunities within and beyond philanthropy to fiercely advocate for racial, economic, and social justice; community organizing; bigger annual payouts to grantee partners, and long-term investments in movement-building. Below are highlights we're delighted to share with you!

Why We Upped Our Annual Grantee Partner Payout to 11%
Woods Fund Chicago Board Chair L. Anton Seals wrote an op-ed for Inside Philanthropy that urged fellow funders to join Woods Fund Chicago in increasing their annual grantee partner payout to move the needle on social change further and faster. Many thanks to Anton and the board for their advocacy and leadership on this front. And thank you, Inside Philanthropy, for publishing this! Read Anton's op-ed here.

Stand with Woods Fund Chicago against SCOTUS rulings and for Racial Justice
"Woods Fund Chicago refuses to back down from our explicit focus on racial justice, and we call on our fellow funders to do the same. We strongly urge foundations to join us and continue to boldly and publicly center BIPOC communities in their grantmaking. Too much is at stake, and we have no time to waste." Statement from Michelle Morales on Her Appointment to the Chicago Board of Education
"I said yes to serving on the CBOE during a mayoral administration that centers working people and their families, the lived experiences and leadership of impacted communities, and CPS families having a say in decisions that impact their children’s education, quality of life, and neighborhood communities." Read Michelle's letter here.

Woods Fund Chicago gives a heartfelt thank-you to immediate past board member Rey Wences for their service on the Woods Fund Chicago Board. Although their tenure was short, it was impactful. We congratulate them on their appointment by Mayor Johnson to the role of First Deputy Mayor of Immigrant, Migrant, and Refugee Rights at the City of Chicago.
"It has been an honor to be part of the Woods Fund family. I leave this board deeply inspired by the vision, mission, and practice of trust-based philanthropy to create social change," Rey said. Although we'll miss Rey's participation on the board, they'll always be a treasured Woods Fund Chicago alum.
