Trying to Scam Us 365 Beware "Account Termination" Scams
For week #3 of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month we'll focus on software "account termination" scams such as the recent "office 365" phish hitting campus inboxes. This scam banks on you not paying attention and providing your account credentials in order to "keep your account open."
Spot the Scam
We've diagrammed this common phish to show you what to look for the next time hackers attempt to darken your 'Outlook.'
Check the Sender
This message is clearly not from an @csus.edu account. While scammers use many addresses including @gmail.com, @yahoo.com, etc., they can also spoof an @csus.edu address to appear from "Sac State." Which is why you'll want to investigate the rest of a message.
Message Content
The subject line is odd and not specific, campus doesn't refer to this software as "office 365" (rather capitalized "Microsoft 365"), and there are number of other grammar errors.
Urgency
Campus will never communicate or threaten account closure in this manner or in an urgent timeframe.
Hover to Discover
Although the hyperlink "www.csus.edu/enrollment-management" appears to point to a Sac State site, hovering over the hyperlink reveals a strange destination.
