The Learning Center Mission & Vision |
Mission
The mission of the Learning Center is to provide students with opportunities to increase and enhance their academic skills and abilities by cultivating effective learning practices. We support investment in learning and studying, respect individual learning styles, and strive to create an environment conducive to learning. With the goal of developing lifelong learners, we support students’ growth in self-confidence and academic achievement.
Vision
The vision of the Learning Center is to empower students to achieve their academic and personal goals through enhanced learning opportunities, interpersonal development, personal responsibility, and leadership.
Our three core functions are to:

The Learning Center provides in-class workshops, personalized academic skills coaching, and online resources to help students strengthen their academic performance. Skill development is available in the areas of:

- Time Management & Organization – prioritizing tasks and planning effectively
- Test-Taking & Exam Preparation – building confidence and positive testing strategies
- Active Study Techniques – note-taking, critical reading, and structured study time
- Motivation & Goal-Setting – addressing procrastination and setting achievable goals

Learning Styles & Preferences – identifying effective study strategies and campus study spaces

The Learning Center Peer Tutoring Program provides space for knowledge building, collaboration, and the development of positive skills, habits, and mindsets. Peer tutors are qualified, well-trained students who provide course-specific support to students in a range of subjects.

The Writing Center empowers students to develop stronger writing skills in organization, development, style, and structure. Student and faculty consultants offer one-on-one conferences across disciplines, helping writers generate ideas, revise drafts, and strengthen editing skills—without directly editing student work.

The Speaking Center supports students in preparing for speeches and presentations. Trained peer tutors and experienced speakers assist with:

- Developing and organizing speech content
- Researching and outlining main points
- Crafting effective introductions and conclusions
- Strengthening overall oral communication skills

The Learning Center is recruiting peer tutors for the s
pring 2026 semester and welcomes faculty nominations of high-achieving students who demonstrate academic strength, leadership, and professionalism. This opportunity allows faculty to support and recognize outstanding students across multiple disciplines, including:

While the Writing and Speaking Centers will not be hiring for Spring 2026, recruitment will resume in Fall 2026. Students interested in gaining peer coaching experience are encouraged to enroll in RHET 327: Speaking/Writing Center Internship, a 1–2 unit course taught by Phil Choong in Spring 2026 (Fridays, 4:45–6:30 p.m.). Participants earn academic credit and receive 16 hours of guaranteed paid work throughout the semester.
