CMS GUIDE Program

Congratulations to Dr. Michelle Sorweid, Dr. Wendy Mohlman, and Liz Garcia-Leavitt from the CMS GUIDE Program team for achieving the milestone of enrolling the first GUIDE participants in July 2025.

CMS Age Friendly Hospital Measure Update

The University of Utah Age-Friendly Collaborative team recently received notification from CMS that in addition to University Hospital and the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, the University Orthopaedic Hospital and Huntsman Mental Health Institute are also subject to the attestation requirements of the CMS Age Friendly Hospital Measure.  Representatives from all 4 hospitals will be joining workgroups focused on meeting the requirements of the age-friendly domains within this Measure (see CMS Passes New 2025 Age-Friendly Hospital Measure).  Please contact Heather Podolan if you are interested in participating in one or more of these workgroups.

Age-Friendly SOTA (State-of-the-Art Conference)

Dr. Jorie Butler and Dr. Timothy Farrell will be attending the virtual State-of-the-Art (SOTA) conference about Age-Friendly Health Systems in VA in September 2025 sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Research and Development (ORD).

Utah Commission on Aging 

UCOA fall quarterly summit was held on Thursday, August 14 from Noon to 1:30 on Zoom. Chair Darlene Curley welcomed members and partners and with Executive Director Ence reviewed packet and shared key updates and recognized UCOA Sunset Review legislative sponsors. Report out to interim committee TBD.

Community Program Updates included registration updates for the Kaleidoscope Arts in Aging where classes are rapidly filling up and kicks off on Saturday August 30 at the Mid-Valley performing arts center and run for two weeks with events throughout the state. This program led by UCOA partner, Emily Christensen of Jewish Family Services has created this incredible collaborative event with other arts organizations and is a first for Utah. Spread the word. Registration on the UCOA website www.utahaging.org.

Caregiver Grant & Roundtable announcing the ACL grant via U Dept of Sociology’s Becky Utz and will operate program initiatives on caregiving education, etc. under the lead of Jen Morgan.

WISE Committees (Gov Cox initiative) UCOA will be serving in advisory role to four core committee in partnership with DAAS/DHHS.

Falls Prevention September awareness event is set at Wheeler Farm on September 23rd from 9 am to 1 pm. Free exhibits, demonstrations, and education.

Alzheimer’s Association Walks season is upon us, please support your team and the cause. There are three Senior Expos in the fall from Davis County to St. George.

Survey to health care providers obo is in the field to help assess how to enable resource communication via practicing providers and their patients.

Additional Reports

Darlene Curley discussed her DC Fellowship related to health policy and older adults. She used Utah in her project to share successful partnerships in the aging network and encourage the Commission body to consider applying for this opportunity.

World Senior Games CEO Kyle Case discussed the sheer size of the upcoming games in St. George and the social and physical benefits of participation and ways to volunteer.

Utah Foundation presented their research mission and relevant to aging policy. Discussed ways for future presentation collaboration.

 

Funding Opportunities

The Department of Internal Medicine’s Health Research and Evaluation for Communities (HREC) Workgroup and Division of Epidemiology’s HREC Section have been established to promote and support research, evaluation, and quality improvement work. It is led by Drs. Jerry Cochran and Megan Vanneman. 

The HREC Section and Workgroup have set aside funding to support the Health Research and Evaluation for Communities Pilot Grant. One grant of up to $30,000 or two grants of up to $15,000 each will be funded. Total available funding under this call will not exceed $30,000. The purpose of these awards is to advance the science and practice for health, wellbeing, and access to high-quality health care, public health, and social services in Utah, the Intermountain West, and nation for all persons regardless of sociodemographic, health, or economic backgrounds.
