Summer hours taking shape: Any thoughts?

Start with multiple academic terms, reduced campus population, retreat days, special events, work-from-home, trips to the beach … and finding the right summer hours for the student union can be hard to pin down.

At this time, Smith Management is looking at summer term hours similar to last year. However, we know that your operations might be different in summer 2023, so before we set the hours with Campus Public Safety, we’d appreciate your input.

The hours we are looking at, through early September, are:
  • Smith open to all persons with PSU ID: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • Open to the general public: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • Open for scheduled events: Special access at the SW Broadway entrance
  • The University Market will be open at 8 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays and on Fridays as staffing allows
  • The Viking Gameroom will be open for reserved special events only
  • PSU Eats is still examining spring term data. Possible summer hours for the food court and coffee shop are TBD.
Those PSU staff members with extended building access will continue to have access to Smith.
Be heard
If your department or Smith-based organization would like to weigh in on the discussion, please email building venue manager Mercedes Youngston with the following information:
– Your contact info and the organization you represent
– Your hour concerns. Please mention whether your department/center/organization will be closed, holding regular hours or hosting scheduled events during the summer terms.
Please reach out to Mercedes by Wednesday, May 17.
Students in the Smith ballroom meet with regalia represenatives from Herff Jones.
At the 2022 Grad Fair, students meet with representatives from Herff Jones. If you pre-ordered from Herff Jones or the University Market (via the Box Office), you can pick up your order at this year's Grad Fair.

Grab Your Cap, Gown Order at Grad Fair

Grad Fair happens noon to 6 p.m. May 15-16 in the Smith Ballroom. It’s an opportunity for graduating students to pick up pre-ordered caps, gowns, tassels and other regalia from Herff Jones and the University Market.

Graduates can also collect their Latin Honors Cords, have photographs taken, start on cap decorating and meet with representatives of PSU’s Alumni Association. Box Office staff will be on site to help with questions about tickets for the commencement ceremonies. (Yes, a graduate needs a ticket to enter commencement.) Tickets can be ordered online at pdx.edu/tickets.

If graduates aren't sure what regalia they need for commencement, Grad Fair is a great chance to ask questions. You can also check out the PSU Regalia: What to Wear website for more information.

Graduates who can’t attend the Grad Fair can still order commencement regalia at pdx.edu/regalia or purchase at the University Market in Smith from May 17 until commencement.

Amazon Hub back in service

The Amazon locker hub in Smith was offline for several weeks due to maintenance work. Now, deliveries can be made to the unit again. We weren’t aware it was inoperational until recently (we just thought they were out of stock on our reusable sandwich bags) and apologize for any inconvenience. Search for the hub "Schoolwork" at 1825 SW Broadway 97201 when you order on Amazon to schedule deliveries to the Hub.

The Feminist of Color Award Ceremony, hosted by the Women's Resource Center, honors the achievements, lived experiences, brilliance, and resiliency of students, faculty, and staff of color at Portland State University.
Its goal is to "disrupt the normative and traditional award ceremonies that center few, and open a space that honors the collective contributions of many. ... Whether you want to celebrate yourself for surviving the institution, or applaud your efforts of self-care, this is a space to recognize and uplift yourself and your community."

Millar Library Electronic Resources and Media Cataloging Assistant Teresa Stapelberg tours the Smith sub-basement to take a look at the CarbinX carbon capture system. When installation is complete, this machine that extracts carbon dioxide from our hot water exhaust will also produce ash that can be turned into cleaners and bars of soap.
And The Bar of Soap Goes To ...

Congratulations to PSU staff members Teresa Stapelberg and Sarah Holliday. They won our Smith Scoop soap giveaway featured in the last newsletter. "Johnny, tell them what they won!" Each lucky staff member takes home a bar of Montane Meadow Clean02 soap, made with pearl ash from carbon dioxide capture systems similar to the one being installed in Smith and an assortment of Smith swag.

The CarbinX system, a new technology being developed by the Canadian firm and brought to PSU with the cooperation of the PSU Planning and Sustainability Office, pulls carbon dioxide from our hot water exhaust and turns it into ash.

Thank you to everyone who entered!
