Go RVing with kids and grandkids
|
RV travel with youngsters is a great way to create lifetime memories. If you’re new to RVing or multigenerational journeys, start with a few basics.
Include everyone. When planning a trip, keep everyone’s interests and activity levels in mind. Family-friendly campgrounds and resorts entertain for hours with pools, beaches, mini golf, and themed activities. So do commercial attractions, such as Disney World and Colonial Williamsburg, which typically have campgrounds nearby. The U.S. National Park Service oversees more than 400 parks, historic sites, monuments, and other properties; visit nps.gov or the NPS app for info. Details about state and provincial parks are also a web search away.
Childproof your rig. Blogger Brandy Gleason writes how she and her husband prepared their travel trailer for a young granddaughter’s first camping trip. Despite extensive cleaning, organizing, provisioning, and attempts at childproofing, the toddler arrived and promptly searched every inch of the RV, discovering electrical outlets and other hazards!

Don’t make it a marathon. When driving, stop often. Kids need to recharge more frequently than adults.
Keep ’em occupied. Stash special snacks and foods for the road; board games and puzzles (not the electronic kind); books and playing cards for nighttime; and maybe surprise toys that come out of storage during the trip. While away the miles playing license plate games (how many states can you find?), I Spy, and Never Have I Ever. Check out this list of road trip games.
Keep it simple. What do you remember from your childhood vacations? Value those uncomplicated moments with your own youngsters. Campfires, fishing, stargazing, hide-and-seek . . . what could be better?

Family RV Association has signed an exclusive agreement with RV Overnights, a membership program that connects RVers with small businesses — farms, wineries, breweries, golf courses, and other intriguing attractions — for overnight stays. RV guests do not pay a camping fee; they’re simply asked to support each host business by making a purchase. The RV Overnights website and mobile app include 27 search filters for finding locations that offer hookups, particular amenities, additional nights, etc. The platform also lists 70,000-plus RV resources to help users locate propane, repair facilities, and more. FRVA members can sign up for this program for just $29.99 annually — a 40 percent savings off the regular $49.99 rate.

Now Starring: Family RV Association!
|
Kevin and Patrice McCabe, hosts of the “RV There Yet?” travel series on Discovery Channel, filmed an episode during FRVA’s recent Perry, Georgia, convention. They took in entertainment, exhibits, and special events — even fireworks — and learned what makes the association so special. The McCabes also welcomed attendees to the “RV There Yet?” Discovery Zone with Winnebago RV displays, product demos, and more. Their Perry episode debuted May 10 on Discovery Channel, but you can check it out anytime at RV There Yet? TV!
Speaking of conventions, consider going back to school — “Rock and Roll High School,” that is. FRVA’s 111th International Convention & RV Expo will be in session July 16-19, 2025, at CAM-PLEX Multi-Event Facilities in Gillette, Wyoming. Meet the McCabes there, too.

May is National Water Safety Month. If your road trips include lakes, beaches, pools, splash pads, and other wet fun, remember these tips: 1. Capable, constant supervision. Actively supervise children and nonswimmers around water, even with lifeguards present. 2. Water competency. Learn to swim and survive in the water, no matter your age. 3. Prevent unsupervised access to water. Install barriers and alarms to keep toddlers and others out during nonswim times. 4. Swim with a buddy. Never swim alone. 5. Wear a life jacket while boating — nonswimmers, always. 6. Be prepared for emergencies. Learn CPR. Bonus tip: Sign up nonswimmers for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on June 26!

Extending the monarchs' reign
|
If you spot a swarm of monarch butterflies fluttering along the roadways, you may be seeing conservation in action. The iconic monarch is endangered due to habitat loss; climate change; and declining populations of its primary host plant, the milkweed. In response, departments of transportation across the U.S. are planting native milkweed in roadside landscapes. These plants enable monarchs and other pollinators to rest and reproduce during migration — crucial to balancing the ecosystem.

Which grill fits the bill?
|
GearLab tests a variety of outdoor products, purchasing all of them at retail and performing a side-by-side analysis. Recently, they evaluated 20 portable grills from various manufacturers and created a list of their top nine picks. The overall winner: the Weber Traveler. Although one of the heaviest grills, at 49 pounds, the testers noted it is easy to transport and clean, offers excellent wind resistance, and has “luxurious features” and solid temperature control. Two lighter grills made the “Best Buy” category: the 22-pound Cuisinart CGG-306 Chef’s Style Portable and the 10-pound Cuisinart Grillster.
