Importance of vaccinations |
With spring break travel approaching, health officials are warning about rising measles cases. The CDC reports five measles outbreaks, defined as three or more related cases, in the U.S. so far in 2026, with 910 confirmed cases as of Feb. 12, including Illinois’ first case in an adult who recently traveled out of state. Dr. Mark Dworkin, professor of epidemiology at the UIC School of Public Health, emphasizes that travel increases the risk of exposure and urges people to stay up to date on vaccinations. Dworkin, who notes that a person with measles can be infectious to others in the days before they have a rash, is available to discuss measles transmission and the importance of immunization in preventing outbreaks.
