It’s cold out! Be smart and stay safe from the dangers of extreme cold. Frostbite and hypothermia are real and can develop quickly when exposed to the current temperatures.
Frostbite
Prevent frostbite by keeping exposed skin covered, especially ears, face, hands, and toes. Stay dry and avoid windy areas. Don’t smoke, drink alcohol, or consume caffeine, as these can worsen the effects of the cold.
Frostbite symptoms include red, painful skin that may turn white or yellow-gray. Skin may feel firm or waxy and numb.
Treating frostbite:

|
|
|
- Go indoors to somewhere warm.
-
Wrap in warm blankets or towels, wear warm socks.
- Place your hands under your armpits or hold something warm.
- Drink warm fluids.
- Do not soak in HOT water or touch HOT surfaces.
- Do not rub exposed areas; this could cause more damage.
|
Hypothermia
Hypothermia can develop when your body temperature drops below 95°F. Prevent hypothermia by wearing layers, including a hat, coat, gloves, and boots. Avoid prolonged time outdoors and stay dry. Symptoms of mild hypothermia are feeling overly tired or sluggish, confused, shivering, and slurred speech.
Treating hypothermia:
|
- Get indoors immediately.
- Remove wet clothing.
-
Cover yourself with warm blankets.
- Call your medical provider or get to the nearest emergency room.
