The owners of this three-story Gulf Shore Boulevard residence loved its location and proximity to the beach, but couldn’t live with the tight, compartmentalized master bedroom, closet and bathroom layout.
|
In addition to recreating the kitchen, we removed the wall separating the primary bedroom and bathroom to create a single, open space. The bathroom was gutted, and we added an electric fireplace. Gray-toned oak flooring flows throughout the space, now 30% larger with a new sitting area. Warm wood treads and landings on the stairwell coordinate with the home’s existing wood floors, and white oak and stainless steel cabling allows for clean sight.

One benefit of a new custom home or kitchen renovation is the kitchen can be perfectly tailored to how you cook and entertain. A first step to getting this result is to think through the space in detail before meeting with the architect or designer.
Imagine how you want the kitchen to work. Where are the most convenient locations for pots, knives and spices? What steps will you take to prepare a meal and get it on the table? An efficient kitchen will have zones for wet work, socializing, cooking and food storage.
|
Wet zone: If the dishwasher will be next to the sink, putting it on the left will be easier for a right-handed person and on the right for a left-handed person. As for the sink, a deep single-bowl is the most practical. Also, a sink with the drain at the back will leave more usable space in the cabinet below.
Social zone: If your kitchen will have an island, reserve this for seating and entertaining. This is also a great place to implement storage through unique cabinet design or a workstation for homeowners who frequently use mobile devices such as laptops and tablets.
Cooking zone: It's fine to put wall ovens and cooktops on opposite ends of the kitchen, but you want to store cookware close to where it will be used—for instance, baking pans near the oven and large pots near the cooktop.
Food zone: Think about making the refrigerator and pantry easily accessible from the food prep area.
