Back-to-School Faculty Teaching Resources

As the fall semester begins, we’ve rounded up some timely resources to help faculty and TAs start the year strong. Our latest blog post covers everything from updated syllabus policies and the Georgia Tech Canvas Course Template to GenAI literacy support, tips for a successful first day, a TA checklist, and more. Whether you're teaching at Tech for the first time or looking to update your syllabi with the newest policies, there's something here for you. 

CTL EVENTS

Fall Teaching Kickoff

August 11, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Instructional Center

We invite new and returning faculty to join us for our annual Fall Teaching Kickoff, complete with a syllabus clinic, networking lunch, and breakout sessions covering everything from student well-being to teaching high-enrollment courses. Our goal is to energize, encourage, and equip faculty to start the semester strong.

Canvas Click-Off

August 13, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Clough 102

Jumpstart your semester with this hands-on training event designed to help you create well-organized, student-centered Canvas courses!  You'll learn how to effectively use the Georgia Tech Canvas template, build and edit course content, set up assignments, and configure your gradebook. Lunch will be provided; registration closes August 6th.

Turn Conflict Into Conversation

August 14, 10 a.m.-noon, Crosland 4160

In this workshop, participants will review a variety of resources, including ones from the Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center, and identify opportunities to integrate them into their courses. This workshop is especially useful for instructors who may need to manage hot-button discussions that can pop up in response to current events.

TA Development Academy

August 15, 7:30 a.m.-noon, Clough 102

Learn best practices, build community, and ask questions at the annual TA Development Academy! We'll discuss grading techniques, student well-being, office hours, and more. All new and returning TAs are encouraged to attend.

Future Faculty Job Search Academy

September 5, 10 a.m.-noon, Crosland 4160

This four-part workshop series prepares graduate students and postdoctoral scholars for the unique academic job search process. On September 5th, we'll kick off the series and discuss practical strategies as you prepare your CV for your application packets. Participants are welcome to register for individual sessions or for the entire series.

Faculty Teaching and Learning Forum: Mid-Semester Feedback

Sept. 9 & 30, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m, Exhibition Hall

Join this two-part interactive forum to explore the power of mid-semester feedback to enhance teaching and learning. We’ll share strategies for gathering student input, interpreting responses, and making timely adjustments. Walk away with practical tools and fresh inspiration to make meaningful changes before the semester’s over.

Teaching with Technology Roundtable: Web Accessibility & Canvas

Sept. 11, 10-11 a.m., Clough 466A or Zoom

During this roundtable, we'll discuss the new Department of Justice web accessibility rule and how it impacts Canvas course content at Georgia Tech. We’ll explore Universal Design for Learning principles that help us better support learning for all students. Roundtables are casual, faculty-led discussions about relevant campus technologies with pedagogical insights.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset

Sept. 19, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Crosland 4160

This workshop explores how students experience failure in the classroom and how instructors can respond in ways that foster growth, resilience, and meaningful learning. We'll introduce practical instructional strategies across three areas - communication, feedback, and assessment - that help shift students’ perceptions of failure from threat to opportunity.

Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows

Applications Due August 8

Applications are open for the 2025-26 Class of 1969 Teaching Fellows Program, which gathers interdisciplinary early career faculty for pedagogically-focused support and professional development. Fellows will learn evidence-based best practices and gain exposure to innovative teaching methods.

Hesburgh Fellows

Applications Due August 15

Nominations are open for the 2025–26 Hesburgh Award Teaching Fellows Program, supporting faculty leaders in teaching. This year’s focus is Discipline-Based Education Research. Fellows will receive support to explore teaching and learning in their fields.

Teaching with Technology Partnerships

Applications Due August 29

Do you have a teaching and learning problem that technology can help solve? We're accepting Teaching with Technology Partnership proposals exploring creative technological uses and solutions to existing course struggles. Partners receive a year of hands-on guidance from CTL as they develop, implement, and assess new projects.
