FEATURE

Trademarks & Licensing

UC San Diego Trademarks and Licensing

We’re focusing on trademarks and licensing — the tools that protect UC San Diego’s identity and help ensure that everything created with the university’s brand supports a consistent, credible presence. Think of them as the framework that keeps our brand recognizable and trusted, while still giving you room to bring forward fresh ideas, sub-brand personality and plenty of Triton spirit.

A strong trademarks and licensing program does more than safeguard logos and names. It helps the university present itself as one connected institution, strengthens community pride and ensures that anything carrying “UC San Diego” reflects the quality and values we stand for. These guidelines give you a clear sense of what will be approved, making the review process smoother and freeing you up to focus on the creative part.

UC San Diego’s trademarks — including logos, the campus name and unit or athletics marks — are protected to ensure consistent and appropriate use. All merchandise bearing the university’s marks must be produced through licensed vendors, follow brand guidelines and use approved logos with required clear space. Licensed vendors are trained on our brand standards and help ensure that everything is produced responsibly, ethically and with the level of quality our name deserves.

By working within this structure, you can create merchandise and materials that feel authentic to your audiences while reinforcing that your work is part of the larger UC San Diego family — unified, recognizable and full of Triton pride.

SPOTLIGHT

Family Weekend

Triton Weeks of Welcome TWOW event graphic

This year’s Family Weekend saw record attendance and a strong, creative use of the brand. The team applied UC San Diego’s colors, tone and typography with their own thoughtful interpretation, creating engaging experiences and visuals for UC San Diego Family Weekend.

They also partnered with one of our preferred licensed vendors, Club Colors, to launch a custom Pop Shop — an on-brand, direct-buy link that made it easy for families to purchase event gear— resulting in over $7,000 in sales. This is a great example of how campus partners can adapt the brand in their own way while keeping it cohesive and distinctly Triton.
