We hope you are well! One week ago today, we welcomed the inaugural class to Vanderbilt University–New York City. We’re still feeling the excitement of seeing this historic chapter come to life, and grateful that you’re part of the journey.

Here’s a look at what’s planned on Vanderbilt’s Chelsea campus for the week ahead and what our neighbors may notice.

At a glance: This week’s key community impacts

Updated construction hours: Construction activity is expected Monday through Friday, and potentially Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Updated access: The 21st Street entrance is now open and serves as the primary entrance for the campus community. The 21st Street gate is staffed by security 24/7, and all overnight campus entry is directed to this entrance.
Temporary chiller: A temporary chiller was installed on 21st Street outside Hoffman to address central HVAC issues. Neighbors may notice noise from the unit and changes to the sidewalk shed.
Renovation and restoration activity: Final touches continue, with community impacts including changes to scaffolding, material movement, temporary handrails, door restoration and sod irrigation. Interior renovation continues in Seabury and Sherred, with minimal anticipated disruption to the community.
Traffic and parking: Vehicles parked in marked no-parking zones are subject to towing. As materials continue to move off campus, activity will be similar to prior weeks, with flaggers directing traffic as needed.
Campus events: Private events are scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. These events may bring additional foot traffic on campus, but are expected to have minimal to no disruption to the community.

The 21st Street entrance is now open and serves as the primary entrance for the campus community.

Spatial impact: The 20th Street gate will remain accessible between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., the gate will be exit-only to align with the quiet hours on the Close.
FYI: Overnight campus entry is now directed through the 21st Street entrance, which is staffed by security 24/7. This helps maintain a quiet, residential atmosphere in the Close during overnight hours, something we know is important to everyone who calls Chelsea Square home.

The temporary chiller installed on 21st Street is expected to remain in place until temperatures drop.

Spatial impact: The community will notice the chiller is located outside the Hoffman boiler room, along with changes to the sidewalk shed.
FYI: This chiller is a temporary solution to address central HVAC issues.

Brick restoration continues, with changes to scaffolding.

Noise impact: Low to moderate noise
Spatial impact: Neighbors may notice movement of materials and changes to scaffolding around campus. Scaffolding updates are expected outside Dodge, Pintard and Dehon throughout the week.
FYI: Facade restoration is part of an ongoing effort to preserve the appearance of our historic campus and support its long-term structural integrity. The use of recovered materials has remained a priority in this process to mitigate unnecessary waste and honor the past.

Ground and landscaping work are nearing completion.

Noise impact: Low to moderate noise
Spatial impact: The bluestone paths on the east and west sides of campus are now connected at the 21st Street entrance. Neighbors may notice visual changes to landscaping as crews complete the final touches.

Renovation continues in Seabury and Sherred.

Spatial impact: Interior work is nearly complete; crews continue working on the fourth floor of Seabury and Sherred’s basement.

Construction of the Campus ADA lift will resume.

FYI: Crews are expected to resume work on the final components of the lift in the weeks ahead. Additional details will be shared as work approaches.

Weekly impacts

Private events are scheduled on Tuesday in The Refectory, Wednesday in The Refectory and Seabury Auditorium, and Saturday in The Refectory and Chapel. Some private events will bring additional foot traffic to campus, but are expected to have overall minimal to no disruption to the surrounding community.

Join us for a timely discussion on the future of democracy in the U.S. and across the Americas.

Participants include Kevin Casas-Zamora, Former Vice President and Minister of National Planning, Costa Rica, Secretary-General, International IDEA; Ruth Ben-Ghiat, Professor of History and Italian Studies, New York University, Author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present; and more.

In the coming weeks, we will share more details about additional campus events that we hope you’ll join us for, including a new take on the former Cocktails and Construction series for our neighbors.

In the meantime, Anchor Down in Midtown will bring Vanderbilt volleyball to New York City on September 13. While the event will take place off campus at Hammerstein Ballroom, it offers a fun opportunity for our community.
