Dear Eagle Nation:
We once again showed why Coppin State University is a vital institution for Baltimore, the students we serve, and the state of Maryland during a visit by the Board of Regents for the University System of Maryland (USM) and my fellow university presidents last week.
Left to right: University of Maryland, College Park President Darryll J. Pines, Dr. Kavita Hegde, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Pamela Wilks, Ph.D., President Anthony L. Jenkins, Ph.D., USM Board of Regents Chair, Linda R. Gooden, USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman.
As we all know, our students are the reason Coppin State University exists. Our students bring our campus to life, they bring passion to our classrooms and spirit to all they do for our beloved university. Their resilience and determination to excel are inspiring.
Here at Coppin, we come together to nurture and foster their passion, nurture their potential, and transform their lives.  We give our scholars experiences that challenge them, words that encourage them, as well as lessons that give them courage and shape who they will become.
Our students were front and center on Friday morning, as they shared with the Board of Regents, and other visitors, the impact Coppin State University has had on their lives. Jahi Chatman (’23), Timothy Johnson-McCoy (’25), Ashley Roman (’23), and Rashaan Ballard (‘20) each described ways Coppin has allowed them to discover themselves, live out their purpose, develop as leaders, and give back to the community. Their testimony was powerful and left a strong impression on the Regents, the Chancellor, and everyone who heard them speak.

We were also able to showcase the work of our outstanding faculty during dinner with the Regents. Dr. Kavita Hegde, Professor of Biology and Biochemistry presented on her research into age-related macular degeneration, and highlighted student involvement in our university’s research enterprise.

Coppin is steadily moving toward our goal of becoming a leader in urban higher education and receiving national recognition for the work we do to transform the lives of students who come to us with a range of life experience, from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
Please join us in investing in our students and their future during Coppin State University Day of Giving, April 18 and April 19, 2023.

Dr. Elgin Klugh
Associate Professor Elgin Klugh, Ph.D., chairs the Laurel Cemetery Memorial Project, which is working to educate the community about the historic cemetery once located in East Baltimore, where the Belair-Edison Crossing shopping center now stands.
The Laurel Cemetery Memorial Project is seeking to create a memorial to those buried in the cemetery before it was demolished in 1958. Before the cemetery was dismantled, several hundred gravestones and an unknown number of burials were exhumed and relocated to a new site in Carroll County. Research has revealed tens of thousands of burials remain under the shopping center.
“It’s important to let people know this place exists, and to make people aware of these individuals again… these people helped make Baltimore what it is today,” Dr. Klugh recently told The AfroDr. Klugh also recently spoke about the book A Place for Memory, about Laurel Cemetery during an event at Red Emma’s in Baltimore.
