Ninth legislative day - Thursday, January 29, 2026

Quick day at the Capitol today

The Georgia House of Representatives and Senate were in and out pretty quickly today with little business.

The House Education Committee met to hear presentations from the Georgia Partnership for
Excellence in Education (GPEE) and the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC).  Chairman Chris Erwin, R-Homer, pointed out that there were no changes to the membership of the committee.  No action was taken on any legislation.

The General Assembly will not meet tomorrow, Friday, but will come together again Monday, February 2.

The Senate Retirement Committee will meet Tuesday and hear SB 150, by Sen. Billy Hickman, R-Statesboro, which would extend the state program that allows retired teachers to return to teaching in subject areas that are hard to fill.  Hickman's bill would apply to teachers who already retired with 25 years of service and may remove RESAs' role in determining the-hard-to-fill areas.  The current law, which expires this year, only allows retirees with 30 years of service to qualify.
The next Legislative Alert will be Monday, February 2
