Dear Eagle Nation:
For more than 125 years, Coppin State University has been dedicated to educating, empowering, and transforming students across generations. With a rich tradition of academic excellence, the university welcomes scholars from all socio-economic backgrounds, fostering an inclusive environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Today, over 90% of Coppin State students receive some form of financial aid, ensuring that higher education remains accessible to all who aspire to achieve their academic and professional goals.
Coppin State University’s commitment goes beyond helping students enroll in college—it prioritizes supporting them through to degree completion. The university recognizes that financial, social, and academic barriers can impede student success, and it works actively to remove these obstacles to reduce attrition and promote persistence. In support of this mission,  funds raised at the annual Coppin State Gala provide essential resources that support students throughout their academic journey, including scholarships that ease financial burdens; internships that provide practical career experience; study abroad opportunities that expand global perspectives; enhanced academic programming that deepens knowledge; and funding for research that fosters innovation and intellectual growth.
Through these efforts, Coppin State University ensures that students are not only prepared to succeed academically but also equipped for meaningful and impactful lives beyond graduation. The Gala exemplifies the university’s dedication to nurturing scholars who are ready to contribute to their communities, advance in their careers, and navigate the world with confidence, resilience, and purpose.
Join us at the Coppin State Gala on Saturday, October 18 and be part of shaping the next generation of leaders. Yyour support makes a lasting impact on our students’ futures.
Last semester, we launched the Building Naming Competition, and members of our campus community participated by casting their votes. I am pleased to inform you that the building names will be revealed during I Love Coppin Week on Wednesday, October 15.

This event provides an opportunity to recognize an individual whose contributions have shaped Coppin State University and to reaffirm our institutional commitment to leadership, education, and social justice.
The naming will involve several key facilities, including the Human and Health Services Building, the Science and Technology Center, the Physical Education Complex, and the Tennis Courts. Each of these names will serve as a visible reminder of the university’s dedication to inclusive excellence and honor the legacy of leaders who have advanced progress on our campus and in the broader community.

This occasion strengthens our shared identity, highlights the values we uphold, and underscores our collective commitment to the university’s mission. We look forward to sharing this milestone with the campus community and celebrating the leaders who inspire our work every day.

Coppin State University congratulates our students on earning 2nd place in the Policython – An AI Policy Challenge, hosted by Microsoft’s Black at Microsoft – DMV Chapter during Congressional Black Caucus Week 2025.
Team members: Anderson Haywood (Data Science), Kaylen Carroll (Marketing/Business), Karis Joyner (Political Science) and Samuel Adekoya (Management) competed against their peers from the University of Delaware and Howard University. The team rose to the challenge and demonstrated excellence in crafting innovative policy solutions at the intersection of technology, equity, and public policy.

Coppin State University to Host the Mid-Atlantic Black Farmers Conference

Coppin State University is amplifying food justice, economic empowerment, and community health as a proud partner and host of the Mid-Atlantic Black Farmers Conference “Farming Forward” conference and on-campus HBCU Farmers Market.
The initiative advances our public health mission—linking students with Black farmers, researchers, policymakers, chefs, and community leaders—while expanding access to fresh, affordable produce for West Baltimore. Students will  have the opportunity to gain hands-on learning in agriculture, food policy, entrepreneurship, and health equity.
“Farming Forward” will gather a diverse and influential group for a multi-day, immersive experience. Each day’s programming is designed to translate ideas into action, from technical workshops and policy dialogues to culinary demonstrations and market hours that directly serve the surrounding community.

College of Health Professions Prepares to Host Transformative #GOALS Event

#GOALS hands-on learning stations.
Representatives from Coppin’s College of Health Professions traveled to Meharry Medical College to experience #GOALS (Go Out and Love Science)—an inspiring initiative designed to introduce underserved middle school students to careers in the medical field through hands-on, engaging activities. Dale Berry, Executive Administrative Assistant to the Dean and Beverly Richards, Director of Strategic Partnerships, were invited by the Ascension Foundation, creators of #GOALS, to observe the full production of the event, from set up to execution.

Now in its fifth year, #GOALS will make its debut at Coppin on Tuesday, November 5. The College of Health Professions, under the leadership of Dr. Joan S. Tilghman, Dean, will lead the campus effort, with support from the School of Natural Sciences. This marks an exciting opportunity for Coppin to help shape the future of young learners through immersive exposure to health and science professions.

Faculty, staff, and students interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact Vincent Fields, Special Assistant to the Dean, at vfields@coppin.edu for more information.

Student Highlight

Latanya A. Carter
Latanya A. Carter, a College of Business student and retired juvenile corrections officer, has recently received two prestigious national scholarships:
  • Thurgood Marshall College Fund/
    Honda “Drive the Legacy” Scholarship
  • NABA Inc. National Scholarship
Despite living on a fixed pension and facing the reality of student loan debt, Carter chose to return to school to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an accountant. These scholarships have significantly lightened her financial burden, allowing her to focus fully on her academic journey.

“Returning to school meant going into student loan debt. I made the choice to do so. Being an accountant has always been my dream. Learning that I won the Thurgood Marshall College Fund/Honda Drive the Legacy Scholarship and then, two weeks later, the NABA Inc. National Scholarship made my heart full. I am so grateful and so honored that they found me worthy. I do not have to take out that loan for this school year. I can focus on my studies instead of a loan payment.”
Carter’s story is a powerful example of perseverance, purpose, and academic excellence.
Stories have a unique way of bringing us closer to each other and to ourselves. Help us share the incredible journey of transformation at Coppin State University. Let us highlight the amazing achievements of our students, faculty, and staff, and spread the word about the positive changes happening on our campus. Together, we can celebrate and inspire others with the excellence at Coppin State.
