Maseeh Matters

Dear Maseeh Community,

As we reflect on the post election landscape, I want to extend my support to each of you during a time that brings both change and a range of emotions. Regardless of the outcomes, I want to reaffirm that our commitment to our mission remains steadfast. Our dedication to empowering students, fostering innovation, and supporting one another in a welcoming, inclusive environment is as strong as ever.

I am inspired daily by the resilience, compassion, and excellence you all bring to our college. Know that we are here for each other, and together we will continue to work toward our shared goals and uphold the values that make Maseeh College such a vital and inclusive community.

With appreciation and support,

Joe

  • The inaugural Maseeh College Inclusive Teaching & Mentoring Symposium was a great success with an insightful and inspiring Keynote Address by Dr. Ebony McGee followed by workshop sessions. Look for future gatherings organized by our Associate Dean of Inclusive Innovation, Tong Zhang.
  • Maseeh welcomed 23 new and four returning students from partner institutions in China. Portland Institute Nanjing (PIN) had its first cohort of 3+1 students at PSU, bringing our transfer enrollment to 26 this term. We also have four cohorts in our two undergraduate majors studying in China, bringing our Nanjing PIN population there to over 1,000 students. Read full status report.
  • Maseeh Ambassadors have been hard at work. They hosted two visits from Clackamas Community College students interested in transferring to PSU for engineering. They toured lab spaces and participated in Q&A panels as part of their visits. Later, Sunset High School students taking PSU CS courses visited the Maseeh College with Maseeh Ambassadors, and then toured the CS Department with Karla Fant (CS).
  • Thanks in large part to the hard work and dedication of Emily Hahn (Student Success and Recruitment Coordinator), Maseeh College has been actively recruiting at multiple conferences and college fairs this past month: the PSU Career and Grad Fair, Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (OSTEM) at the Oregon Convention Center, Oregon National College Fair at the Oregon Convention Center, and Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Diversity in STEM (NDiSTEM) Conference in Phoenix, and the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Conference in New Orleans. If any faculty want to help with future outreach efforts, reach out to Emily.
  • A small group of Maseeh students visited the new PGE Operations Center. This is one of the career site visits (like the Intel visit in the Spring) coordinated each quarter during which we hope to expose students to different fields of work in engineering and computer science.
  • Trainspotting in action. This amazing photo of two of our incredible mechanical engineering grad students in the Wind Energy and Turbulence Lab has been gracing buses and streetcars in Portland this month as part of PSU's "Anything But Ordinary" campaign, and they managed to capture the meta moment of themselves in front of their likenesses. We also have some shots from Viking Motor Sports VMS and the Agile and Adaptive Robotics Lab (AARL) used in the campaign. You can also check out this video featuring Alex Hunt and Muscle Mutt (MME) used in the campaign.

  • Starting this academic year, all applications for sabbatical leave for 2025-26 will need to be submitted to the Dean’s office by January 31, 2025 to Chris Mast, with a copy to Tricia Hutchins. This new deadline will allow the Dean to review and consider all applications at one time. Faculty should work with their Department Chair to follow the process in each unit for sabbatical applications. Information about sabbaticals, including the request form, can be found on the OAA website. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
  • The Maseeh College Food Drive for the PSU Food Pantry is running now through December 31st. One in nine PSU students go six days or more without eating anything in a month due to food insecurity, and nearly half of PSU students experience some form of food insecurity. The PSU Food Pantry serves anyone with a PSU badge, providing free food and other basic needs to over 200 students per day. Donate at this link or by scanning the QR code on flyers posted in department offices. Select "Other" and enter "PSU Food Pantry" into the donation form online. You can also bring non-perishable food items to the Maseeh Holiday Party on December 11th (info below).
  • Website update. Thanks to the chairs, managers, and others who have been meeting with Admissions to offer insights on the current department websites. We are wrapping up the last of the information gathering meetings, and work is set to start next term on creating a more cohesive and user-friendly experience for prospective students.
  • Our Faces of Maseeh campaign started this term. We're featuring students, staff, faculty, alumni, and labs in mini-videos on social media. You can check them out as they're published on our YouTube channel. If you're interested in participating, fill out this form.
  • University Communications reminds us to stay informed with Currently, PSU’s weekly employee newsletter delivered right to your inbox. Delivered every Monday to your @pdx.edu email during Fall, Winter, and Spring terms, Currently covers essential campus news and announcements—including budget updates—recognition of our colleagues, campus events, and exclusive opportunities for PSU employees.
