February 2026 Newsletter

January was a long, cold month and spring break starting at the end of this month sounds nice after so much cold and snow. Cold weather and being stuck indoors means sharing germs, so remind your student about the three prepaid visits at Olin Health Center and the Sick Meal Pickup Arrangements if they live on campus. It’s no fun to be sick, but maybe we can make it a little easier to be away from home.

If you’re looking for something to send to your student now, or maybe something for your soon-to-be graduate, we now have the items from the Spartan Family Care Kit available for purchase individually! You can still purchase the entire kit, but if there was something specific you were interested in, you can now buy just that item! (I’m buying one of those plush blankets!)

One final note before you continue to read all the happenings coming up in February and March. Feb. 13 will remain a hallowed date for Spartans everywhere. Classes are suspended for the day, and remembrance events and support spaces are planned throughout the afternoon and evening. We encourage all Spartans to care for themselves and others in the ways they need that day and are here to support them in any way we can.

In this month of love and always, we love you Spartans.

Take care,
Laurin

2026-27 Housing Sign-Up for Current First-Year Students

As 2026-27 Housing Sign-Up at MSU approaches, we want to help you and your student prepare. Please review the key details below and be sure to check the Second-Year Sign-Up webpage for the latest updates.

  • Your student’s 2026-27 Housing Contract is available for signature in their My Housing account. It must be signed by noon March 6 to receive a sign-up window.
  • In mid-March, after the contract is signed, your student will be randomly assigned a 24-hour window to select available housing.
  • Current first-year students will have designated spaces in each neighborhood, with new spaces released daily throughout the sign-up period.
  • If your student wants to live with specific roommates or suitemates, they should create a roommate group before their selection window opens.
  • Students interested in second-year Living-Learning Community (LLC) housing will work directly with their LLC, who will submit assignment lists to the Housing Assignments Office.
  • Rock the Block is March 10 at the Breslin Center!

Student Accounts

The spring tuition bill was due Feb. 1. If you missed the due date, it’s not too late to sign up for the spring payment plan. Visit our Payment Plan FAQ website for more information.

Already signed up for the payment plan? Great! The next installment is due March 1st. Be sure to review your account each month to make sure no additional charges have been added as these will not automatically be added to your payment plan. MSU will never increase your payment plan without your consent. You have the option to pay any additional charges separately or consolidate them into your existing payment plan.

Heat in the Residence Halls

MSU uses steam heat through radiators, which may be different from what your student is used to. If their room feels cold, here are a few things to check:

  • Make sure the heat is turned on. Visit liveon.msu.edu/in-room for specific hall instructions.
  • Ensure the radiator is not blocked. Curtains, furniture or other items placed in front of the radiator can impede airflow and prevent the room from heating properly.
  • Close the blinds and confirm the window is fully closed and latched. Even a small gap can let in cold air and affect the room temperature.
  • After making these adjustments, allow a few hours for the room to warm up.

If all of this has been done and your student is still experiencing issues, they should submit a maintenance request through their My Housing account. Instructions and the portal can be found at:  liveon.msu.edu/maintenance.

Spring Break
Spring break is just around the corner! From Saturday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 8, all residence halls will remain open. If your student is traveling off campus, we wish them safe and enjoyable travels. If they are choosing to stay on campus for all or part of the break, no additional action is required. Visit Eat at State for updated dining hours.

During the break, card access will be required to enter the halls. RAs will be on duty daily from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Primary Service Centers in each neighborhood will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can find open locations at liveon.msu.edu/servicecenters.

Advancement
In February 2025, MSU celebrated the opening of its first free-standing Multicultural Center. Since then, the MCC has been a gathering place for students of all backgrounds to celebrate, learn and deepen their connection with each other. On its one-year anniversary, we are asking our community to donate to the Multicultural Center Programmatic Endowment. This fund helps to ensure that the MCC remains a beacon of support, creativity and cross-cultural dialogue. To give back and learn more about how you can support MCC programming, please visit our CrowdPower page here.

Financial Aid
The 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available at fafsa.gov. Completing this application each year ensures students are eligible for any student financial aid that requires the FAFSA, including federal student loans. Students or new Contributors completing the FAFSA for the first time need to set up the required FAFSA ID.

Adjustments to a financial aid package (due to changes in enrollment, updated residency, addition of an award, etc.) are communicated through the confidential student financial aid portal. No emails or texts are sent alerting students of changes to their financial aid package.
