The Myaamia Center staff just returned from our winter stomp and storytelling in Oklahoma and are still dusting off from all the activities. It was such a great pleasure to see so many relatives, students and staff from all over our homelands and beyond. Our winter gathering just keeps getting bigger each year!
Now we turn our attention to the spring semester, our tribe students and the upcoming Myaamiaki Conference. It looks like another busy semester for all of us here at the Myaamia Center. Our conference is shaping up nicely with registration open on our website - please register here. This year we will celebrate our 10th biennial Myaamiaki Conference...

Hunting is one activity that Myaamia people continued to practice even through the period of language and cultural loss of the early to middle 20th century. In this blog post, historian Cameron Shriver begins by summarizing a little of what we know about cultural practices that make Myaamia hunting different from those practiced by our European-American neighbors. In the remainder of the post, Cam includes excerpts from significant historical sources that describe hunting from the late 1600s through the early 1700s.

Myaamia Education Office Updates

At the end of January, a new exhibition on the revitalization of the making of minohsayaki ‘painted hide robes’ opened at the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum at Miami University (RCCAM). The exhibition, Minohsayaki ‘Painted Robes’: A Peewaalia and Myaamia Story of Reclamation, was co-curated by Jason Shaiman (Curator of Exhibitions at RCCAM) and George Ironstrack (Myaamia Center). It examines the return of hide painting to the Peewaalia (Peoria) and Myaamia communities through the first-hand experiences of travel to European archives, storytelling, hide tanning, and hide painting. The exhibition is open through June 8, 2024.

Before the semester began, about 12 Myaamia students traveled to Miami, Oklahoma for the 27th Annual Winter Gathering and Stomp Dance. Mihši-neewe to all the students who welcomed university guests while spending time with the Myaamia community.
The Myaamia Heritage class resumed at the end of January with this semester's class focusing on tribal sovereignty and current events affecting Myaamiaki ‘Myaamia people’ with a special focus on visual forms of sovereignty found in different Myaamia art forms.

Finally, we have also started this year’s Maple sugaring by tapping trees in Miami University’s Natural Areas. We look forward to seeing how much sap we can collect to process into syrup and sugar.
