To celebrate our April/May issue, which dives deep into the secrets of great parties, the editorial team threw a humdinger of a celebration, naturally. With winter slipping into spring here in the South Carolina Lowcountry, we bought two bushels of local oysters (clusters, of course) and lit up the firepit for a classic oyster roast. But it was the side dishes that stole the show. Those biscuits on the cover? They tasted just as good as they look, and a few leftovers got stuffed in pockets for late-night snacks. A country ham bourbon luge (yep, you read that right) also took center stage, with plenty of ham slice chasers to go around.
If you’re looking for inspiration for your own fete, we’ve got you covered. Along with the luge, a parlor trick inspired by chef William Dissen that you can read more about in my editor’s letter in the issue, we canvassed some of the South’s most welcoming hosts for their party wisdom, from those cheese straw biscuits to the best store-bought shortcuts (Bunny Williams isn’t above stocking up on chicken potpies from KFC) to setting the right mood to the perfect porch punch, courtesy of chef Duane Nutter. And Keith Meacham lovingly remembers the lessons she learned from a true Southern original, the raucous and always fun Julia Reed.

But it’s not all about entertaining. You’ll hear from T.
