Expand Your Mind and Your Résumé with FOLDIS
The Foreign Language Diversity and Inclusion Series, also known as FOLDIS, is underway, but it isn’t too late to get involved. In its second year and developed by IUP faculty, the program offers students an opportunity to expand their cultural competency through a variety of workshops and activities. The program is free and open to all IUP students (please bring your I-Card for attendance purposes). The second and final week of the program and its activities are listed below.
- Tuesday, September 19, “Language Universals: Focusing on Commonalities for Diversity and Inclusivity” will take place in Jane Leonard Hall, Room 225, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
- Wednesday, September 20, “Music for a Cultural Fusion” will be held in Cogswell Hall, Room 121, from 11:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.
- Friday, September 22, “Mighty + Melodic: Mini Musical Instruments” will be held in Folger Hall from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
- Saturday, September 23, “Hugo Cruz and Caminos” will be held in Gorell Hall (second floor of Sutton Hall) at 7:00 p.m.
Three certificates of participation can be awarded: a certificate of multicultural engagement, earned by attending any three FOLDIS events; a certificate of multicultural awareness, earned by attending any two FOLDIS events; and a certificate of FOLDIS Ambassador, earned by bringing a friend along to attend a FOLDIS event. We hope that students will take advantage of the series and the opportunity to add a certificate to their résumé.

Study Skills
Use the study cycle to best prepare for each course. Preview course material before class. Attend each course with an open mind and willingness to learn. Next, review your notes and assignments consistently throughout the week, and spend time studying in small increments rather than cramming or procrastinating at the last minute before quizzes and exams. The last step in the study cycle is checking your knowledge using flashcards or a study partner to assess your understanding of course information.

Body Language
Communication is key in today’s professional world, and body language plays a critical role in communication. Therefore, a knowledge and understanding of non-verbal communication is useful to all professionals to ensure effective interactions.
Learn more about body language and communication by joining us on Wednesday, September 20, at 6:00 p.m. in 225 Leonard Hall for the first installment of the fall Career Ready Seminar Series: “The Powerful Effects of Body Language in Work and Life.”

Celebrate Constitution Day by attending a public reading of the US Constitution on Monday, September 18, from noon until 1:20 p.m. For 15 years, IUP has recognized this important day in US history by asking IUP staff, faculty, and student volunteers to read a section of the Constitution in front of Stapleton Library. If you are interested in reading a part of the document, you will receive a commemorative T-shirt, a cookie, and a pocket-sized copy of the Constitution (the first 100 participants will be eligible).
