Advancing Psychometrics with Network Science and Artificial Intelligence

Alexander Christensen

Wednesday, February 12th 12-1 pm | 1400 18th Ave S A2009

Scales and questionnaires are a fundamental component of social science research. The process of scale development and validation can take several years and cost several tens of thousands of dollars. On top of these resource barriers, expertise on a given topic in both the substantive area and psychometrics is required. Recent developments in network psychometrics and large language models have broken down these barriers to put scale development back into the hands of the substantive experts.

In this talk, Alexander will introduce network psychometrics and how it can be used to facilitate more robust scale development. Afterwards, he will showcase a new automated scale development and validation tool called AI-GENIE that leverages generative artificial intelligence (genAI). AI-GENIE's effectiveness will then be demonstrated via simulation and five nationally representative samples. Alexander will conclude with a discussion on the potential to have theory meet measurement in practice. Pizza lunch will be served.

Spark Research Grants 2025 Cycle Launch

LIVE Spark Research Grants stimulate applied exploration of novel learning technology ideas and directions with strong potential for impact in formal, informal, or workplace learning contexts. We encourage proposals that include novel applications of emerging learning technologies and particularly those that explore the use of AI and analytics to improve learning and/or training.

Spark Research Grants provide financial support as well as generous in-kind resources. Proposal budgets will be carefully evaluated with priority given to those that are well-justified and clearly support project's goals.

Proposals are due March 21, 2025
