Dear Eagle Nation:
I had the honor of watching over 350 graduates transform from Coppin State students to Coppin State alumni at our commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17.
New graduates on Physical Education Complex field at 2024 Commencement
Commencement is proof that Coppin is devoted to fostering academic excellence and supporting students on their journey to achieve their educational and professional goals. Coppin State awarded bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and honorary degrees in a wide range of disciplines, including early childhood education, criminal justice, social work, nursing, marketing, health information management, and computer science.
The successful completion of degrees is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our faculty, who are committed to providing our students with the tools and knowledge necessary to reach this milestone.
It was a pleasure to have Dr. Linda L. Singh, founder and CEO of Kaleidoscope Affect LLC and the first African American woman major general (retired), as our 2024 commencement speaker. Dr. Singh delivered an encouraging message of resilience to the Class of 2024.

Coppin State will always be home for our graduates. We were honored to be joined by 50 esteemed alumni, spanning from the class of 1964 to 2023, who have continuously supported Coppin for more than 50 years.

Faculty Highlight

Coppin State provides its students with an exceptional learning experience because of its unwavering faculty. Dr. Daniel P. Joseph, Associate Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Arts & Sciences and Education, began his career at Coppin in 1986 as an instructor of physical education for children with disabilities for future teachers.

“Daniel Joseph served Coppin State well. He was always willing to serve the School of Education in any capacity to support its upward mobility – whether that meant working internally with colleagues, serving as an academic advisor, department chairperson, or supporting community initiatives. He gave his best to the School of Education and the students he served. There are many special education teachers in the state whose academic skills and pedagogical styles were enhanced by their interaction with Dr. Joseph. I wish him well,” said Dr. Leontye L. Lewis, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Education.

For over 40 years, Dr. Joseph served as Principal Investigator for four federal grants training teachers to work with children with disabilities, as well as many local and regional service grants. He also served as Director for the Off-Campus Initiatives, offering courses for teachers in area school districts for certification and recertification. Dr. Joseph serves as Coordinator for Graduate Studies and Coordinator for Special Education. He successfully developed Maryland and national recognition initiatives for graduate and undergraduate special education teacher certification programs. As Dr. Joseph prepares for retirement, Coppin State is grateful for his support and years of service.
