Composters, rejoice! Skokie recently reached a new sustainability milestone.
|
Skokie community members collectively composted:
|
-
27.4 tons in August, beating our previous monthly record by 1.1 tons
- 188 tons so far in 2025
- 849 tons since the start of the program in 2020
|
Get started: Learn about composting options in Skokie, including curbside collection and free food scrap drop-off sites.
Why it matters: The Village’s Environmental Sustainability Plan calls for reducing landfill waste by diverting organic materials like food scraps into composting — helping enrich the earth and build a greener future.

New! Solar Power Without the Panels
|
We're proud to announce the launch of Skokie Community Solar – a new program that brings the environmental and economic benefits of solar power without the need for rooftop panels or upfront costs.
Sign up: Free enrollment in the program is open now on a first-come, first-served basis.
(Note: Those enrolled in the Village’s electric aggregation program are eligible to participate in the community solar program.)
How it works: Skokie Community Solar allows renters, homeowners and small business owners to subscribe to a local solar project and receive monthly bill credits worth up to 15 percent of their electricity bill. Program participants will receive two monthly bills:
|
- One ComEd bill, reduced by the value of your solar credits
- One bill from solar provider Nexamp for the cost of those credits at a 15 percent discount
|
For example, if your solar credits are worth $100 and your discount is 15 percent, your ComEd bill would be reduced by $100, and then you would pay $85 separately to Nexamp. Your total savings for that month would be $15.
Learn more: The Village will host public information sessions to share details about the program at Skokie Public Library on Monday, October 13 at 1 p.m. and Wednesday, October 29 at 5:30 p.m. Learn more about Village of Skokie solar energy programs and resources.

Don’t Let Your Guard Down Against Insect-Borne Illnesses!
|
Even though fall is here, we’re still at risk for tick and mosquito-borne illnesses, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus. Prevention is key to staying safe and healthy!
|
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BUG BITES WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS
|
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellant
- Wear loose-fitting, long clothing to cover up bare skin
- Walk in the center of trails and avoid tall grass or brush
- When you come inside, check your body and clothes for ticks
-
Remove standing water from around your home (bird baths, gutters, buckets). Mosquitoes can lay eggs in even a small amount of water.
- Use screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitos out
|
IF YOU EXPERIENCE THESE SYMPTOMS, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION EARLY
