Dear Eagle Nation:
This week, the campus of Coppin State University will be buzzing with activities focused on a new academic year.
Today, faculty and staff came back together to prepare for the new academic year at University Day. The day-long event gave us an opportunity to interact, set the tone for the year ahead, and prepare to deliver our best for our students.
Students living on campus this fall will move into their residence halls this Friday, August 25, and Saturday, August 26.
I am also looking forward to meeting our new and returning students and visiting classes when we kick off the new academic year on Monday, August 28.
Here at Coppin State, we are committed to providing our community of scholars with a transformative education and life-changing experiences that will spur their personal growth, spark their curiosity, and inspire them to make the world better.
Our faculty, staff, students, and alumni are achieving great things. This new year is another chance to truly go ALL IN for Coppin and come together as a caring and thriving community.  I invite you to join us on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the James Weldon Johnson Auditorium, as we all come together for Fall Convocation.

The Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) announced its first round of grants to develop 20 makerspaces across the state and expand access to manufacturing tools.  Associate Professor Ronald C. Williams, Ph.D., who is the founding director of the Center for Strategic Entrepreneurship, spoke to the Baltimore Business Journal about the benefits of creating a statewide network of makerspaces, and what has made OpenWorks in Baltimore so successful.
“People have been making things since the beginning of time," Williams said. "But what's unique about it is that you're creating a space where you can also build community."
Seventy-five years ago, at Druid Hill Park, a group of people took a stand against segregation at the tennis courts there. They were arrested. Teisha Dupree-Wilson, Ph.D., an assistant professor of history at Coppin State University, spoke to The Baltimore Banner about the significance of the protests in 1948.

“The tentacles of Jim Crow extended into every single arena. It even extended into the ocean. There was a white part of the beach and a Black part of the beach. Black waves and white waves. Most don’t tend to think of Baltimore as a Southern city, but it was. It’s just way up south.”
Luis Perez ('23)

Coppin State Senior Making an Impact with Greater Baltimore Committee

Luis Perez (’23) is a Sondheim Nonprofit Leadership Fellow, who served as a Policy and Research intern with the Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC), an organization that provides economic and civic leadership for the Baltimore Region.

"I recognize and appreciate that this fellowship with the Greater Baltimore Committee is a tremendous opportunity to gain valuable first-hand public service experience,” said Perez. “The GBC is an established and respected entity in the City of Baltimore, I am honored to add my Coppin spirit to the positive change impacting the region.”

Perez says he enjoys taking a close look at issues impacting the community; including small business development, and vacant homes in Baltimore, and research that can help drive solutions.

“The coursework I've completed as an African American history major at Coppin has prepared me immensely for this fellowship by teaching me how to frame relevant questions to point me toward the necessary resources in order to provide a holistic amalgamation of the facts.”

Perez is a member of the Honors Program at Coppin State University, which connects scholars with opportunities to enhance their learning experience at Coppin State. The Honors Program also prepares students to go on to graduate school and launch their careers once they earn their undergraduate degree. He credits the support of his professors and the Honors Program with helping him secure this opportunity.

When Perez finishes his coursework in the fall, he plans to apply to graduate school, to pursue a Juris Doctor and Master of Public Policy and wants to pursue a career in public policy.
