The Call for Nominations is now open for the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award, Exemplary Educator Award and Rising Star Award recognizing outstanding contributions by our faculty in health and basic sciences education. Awards will be presented at the annual Academy of Educators: Education Day on October 14, 2025.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a faculty member who has shown a lifelong commitment to education and demonstrates excellence in three or more domains of education and mentorship. Current WashU Medicine faculty nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award should have at least twenty years of service as faculty in an academic teaching setting.
The Exemplary Educator Award recognizes a faculty member who is actively building a legacy as an educator through contributions in two or more domains of education and mentorship. Current WashU Medicine faculty nominated for the Exemplary Educator Award should have at least six years of service as faculty in an academic teaching setting.
The Rising Star Award recognizes a current WashU Medicine faculty member who shows exceptional promise as an educator through contributions in one or more domains of education and mentorship. Current WashU Medicine faculty nominated for the Rising Star Award have less than six years of service as faculty in an academic teaching setting.
Faculty educators may be nominated for these awards based on their contributions and accomplishments in the following Academy of Educators domains:

Teaching Scholars Program |

The Teaching Scholars Program is a certificate program intended for health professions faculty who wish to obtain scholarly expertise in curriculum development, design, and evaluation. The program provides enhancement of knowledge and skills, with a focus on core components of educational scholarship and curriculum development. The program consists of twice-monthly seminars during the 2025-2026 academic year, a curriculum development, design, or evaluation education scholarship project completed under faculty mentorship/guidance, and a capstone presentation event.

Program Director Bootcamp |

On behalf of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) office, we are delighted to announce that applications are now open for the 2025-2026 Program Director (PD) Bootcamp course. This comprehensive certificate program, offered by the GME office, is open to new, aspiring, and experienced residency and fellowship PDs from both accredited and non-ACGME accredited programs. Current and aspiring Associate Program Directors (APDs) are also encouraged to apply. This course aims to enhance GME knowledge, foster connections with other GME leaders, develop new skills, promote innovation, tackle common PD challenges, strengthen leadership capabilities, and focus on career and professional growth.
The course consists of 11 monthly in-person sessions on Wednesday afternoons from 1-4pm, August 2025 through June 2026. Attendance of at least 80% of the sessions (9 sessions) is required to achieve the certificate. The confirmed session dates are 8/27/2025, 9/17/2025, 10/15/2025, 11/12/25, 12/10/25, 1/14/2026, 2/4/2026, 3/4/2026, 4/29/2026, 5/20/2026 and 6/10/2026.
To apply, complete the application form, agree to attend at least 80% of the sessions, and submit a letter of support from your department chair or division chief to ensure support for this commitment.

Overview: The Academy of Educators, in partnership with the Office of Medical Student Education, will be offering two opportunities to attend a workshop focused on crafting high-quality narrative assessments.
By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

- List the components of high-quality written narrative assessments.
- Write high-quality narrative comments on assessment forms.

Call for Education Day 2025 Abstract Submissions: Due by Wednesday, 5/1/25 |
The Education Day committee invites faculty and learners across all WashU Medicine programs & departments to submit an abstract for poster or oral presentation at Education Day on October 14, 2025. We are looking for a wide variety of abstracts representing both education research and innovative approaches to education across the health professions and across learner stages from undergraduate through post-graduate (including continuing education). Works in progress and submissions from students, residents & fellows are welcome.
Submissions are encouraged on the following education-related topics:

- Scholarship of teaching and learning
- Course and curriculum development
- Instructional design
- Education delivery
- Selection of learners (e.g., to enhance diversity and excellence in the field)

Assessing and supporting learners
- Professional development of health professions educators

In addition, we welcome abstracts that align with this year's theme, Cultivating Joy & Meaning in Health Professions Education, such as those that explore ways to foster engagement, fulfillment, and connection in teaching and learning.
There will be a limited opportunity for oral abstract presentations. All requirements for abstract submission, encouraged topics, tutorials, and contact information for questions are viewable on the Academy of Educators website.

Call for Small Grants Proposals |

The Academy of Educators in collaboration with the Medical Education Research Unit (MERU) of the Washington University School of Medicine are pleased to announce the call for proposals for grant funding for education research and scholarship projects. Projects must be focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning, rather than biomedical discovery or application. Proposals may originate from any unit within the School of Medicine. The principal investigator must be a WUSM faculty member. Any questions about the appropriateness of a proposal can be directed to MERU. Grants of up to $5000 will be awarded based on a competitive review process. Please reference the application requirements here, and limit to 4 pages inclusive of references.
