Dear colleagues,
Last week, William & Mary announced Douglas “Doug” Schmidt ’84, M.A. ’86, as the inaugural dean of William & Mary’s School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics. Doug, a renowned computer scientist who is also a double alumnus of our Sociology department, has an impressive career record and is an energetic and collaborative leader. Please join me in giving him a warm W&M welcome when he joins us this January.

Please RSVP by October 11.
- Last Thursday, October 3, you should have received a message from Pete Kellogg, Chief Information Security Officer, regarding mandatory cybersecurity training. Please complete the training ahead of the November 1 deadline. Contact the Technology Support Center at 757-221-4357 with any questions.

This week’s shout-out goes to Jessica Paga, Josh Erlich, Jennifer Stevens, Joshua Gert, and Trey Mayo for taking part in the highly anticipated return of the Raft Debate on Monday, October 28. A beloved pre-pandemic W&M tradition, the annual Raft Debate features four W&M faculty members from diverse disciplines, stranded on a desolate island with only a one-person life raft for escape to civilization. Learn more and RSVP on the Raft Debate website.

I know that it’s a busy time of year, but don’t forget to make time for the Connect on the Patio event this Wednesday. It’s a great opportunity to spend time with colleagues you might not see on a regular basis.
I hope you all have a wonderful Fall Break ahead!
