[5] Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates an effective end of
slavery in the United States.

It marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved people there, over two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863. This date is important because it represents the enforcement of emancipation across the nation, particularly in distant Confederate regions. Juneteenth has since grown into a celebration of African American freedom, culture, and progress, recognized as a state holiday or observance in most states and as a federal holiday in the U.S. since 2021.
