2023 Faculty Exhibition on view in Reinberger Gallery

A tradition that spans more than 100 years, the Faculty Exhibition is a celebration of art, design and their makers. It provides an opportunity for the public to view new, original and innovative works by CIA’s world-renowned art and design faculty. The show will remain on view through October 8.
Also, be sure to stop by the 2023 Studio Operations Exhibition in the Ann and Norman Roulet Student + Alumni Gallery through September 22. Studio managers and technical specialists are experts in the ways of making associated with their disciplines. At CIA, they troubleshoot logistics, brainstorm solutions and play an integral role in supporting students and faculty.

Join CIA president in Columbus

We hope you will save the date of Tuesday, September 19 as CIA President + CEO Kathryn Heidemann welcomes our alumni and friends in the Columbus area to join her at Gemüt Biergarten (734 Oak St, Columbus). You will have a chance to connect with CIA’s new president, learn about recent initiatives and priorities for the future, and mingle with fellow Central Ohio alumni and friends. John Ewing to retire as Cinematheque director

John Ewing, the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque’s co-founder and director since 1986, will retire on June 30, 2024. Read more details from Crain's Cleveland here.

Join us for Lunch on Fridays lecture series

Spend a lunch hour learning about the latest in art and design during these Friday lectures. Each lecture features a variety of artists and designers from around the world, including CIA faculty and visiting artists. On September 8 from 12:15 to 1:30pm in the Peter B. Lewis Theater, students who participated in the Creativity Works program will discuss their projects. For a list of upcoming lecutres, click here

Career Services hosts Careers in Film Workshop

CIA students and alumni are encouraged to attend Careers in Film Workshop: Art Department. The event will feature art director Geza Kassai and is hosted in partnership with the Greater Cleveland Film Commission and and the local chapter of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE 209). Topics will include breaking into the film industry; understanding department hierarchy and job descriptions; learning about the set designer role; and becoming familiar with how an art director works with special effects, visual effects, props and more.
The workshop will take place from 10am to 1pm Saturday, September 23 in the Peter B. Lewis Theater. Registration by 5pm Friday, September 22 is required. Register here.

Ron Testa '65 had work in In-Between Moments and The Found Object at Praxis Photo Arts Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. 
Margaret Fischer '69 was featured in Case Western Reserve University's "the daily," which celebrated her retirement after 50 years as an art instructor for the university.
Joe Stavec '80 won the Best of Show award at the 47th Annual Fairmount Art Exhibition at Fairmount Center for the Arts in Russell Township, Ohio. First- and sixth- place awards were received in the surrealism category, and a first-place award was received in the fashion category at the 2023 World Art Awards. Work is also featured in the BIG @SS @RT SHOW at the Gallery at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio through September 8. 
William Moore '84 has work in Abstract 2023 with Los Laguna Art Gallery in Laguna Beach, California through September 30.
Mark Howard '86 will have a solo show, In Color, opening at HEDGE Gallery in Cleveland’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood on September 15.
Judy Takács '86 has a solo show, Mothers, Women, Children, Choices at Chagrin Arts in Chagrin Falls, Ohio from September 17 through November 17. An opening reception will take place September 17 from 2 to 4pm. Work and an article by Takács also appear in the fall 2023 issue of CAN Journal
Kevin Geiger '89 published a new children’s book, Grandpa Groundhog.
Barbara Stanczak '90 will have a solo exhibition, Spirit & Matter, on view at the Akron Art Museum in Akron, Ohio. Learn more about the work in this show during "Coffee with the Artist: Barbara Stanczak" on September 13 details here. An opening celebration will take place on September 14 from 6 to 9pm.
Yuko Kimura '94 has work in Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper at Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio through September 17.
Jenniffer Omaitz '02 has work in A Precarious Situation through October 12 at Gallery West at Cuyahoga Community College’s Western Campus in Parma. A reception will take place September 13 from 5 to 7 pm. Work also appears in Shapes of Abstraction: Nine Women Artists, a group also featuring Rebecca Kaler '64, at Context Fine Art in 78th Street Studios in Cleveland.
Sarah Lohman '05 wrote a second book, Endangered Eating, which will debut October 24 from W.W. Norton & Company.
Davon Brantley '18, George Kozmon '82Leigh Brooklyn '11, Alyssa Lizzini '22 and Painting faculty member Tony Ingrisano have work in ON LINE: Drawing our Reality at Yards Project in Cleveland from September 7 to October 14. 
Crystal Miller '23 has a solo show, DRMWRLD, at Maria Neil Art Project through November 3. Work also appears on the cover of CAN Journal's fall 2023 edition. Learn more about Miller and her work in CAN Journal
