African Americans and the Arts: A Black History Celebration
By: Courtney Sykes, Senior Development Assistant, ME
I’m thrilled to provide a recap of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.’s (NCNW) Black History Month Celebration, themed "African Americans and the Arts," which took place on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Greenbriar Mall.
As the First Vice President of Programs sitting on the Executive Board, it brings me great joy to have organized an event that brought together over 70 attendees; it truly was a day filled with inspiration, education, and celebration!
The event featured a diverse array of activities and performances, showcasing the profound impact of African Americans on the world of the arts. Highlights included captivating live performances, a vibrant “Parade of Fashions” featuring designs from Suakoko Betty, and an electrifying performance by the Sankonscious Percussion Ensemble. We were honored to have Sister Omelika Kuumba deliver a dynamic keynote address and performance, accompanied by student dancers from Spelman and Morehouse.
Additionally, we had the pleasure of featuring Georgia Tech student talent during our program.

Courtney Sykes and BME student Tatyana Cook (Vice President of AASU at Georgia Tech)
Lauren Hester, a psychology major, delivered two beautiful performances, sharing her talent through song. And Tatyana Cook, a biomedical engineering major, served as a greeter for the event and assisted with our technology setup. Tatyana currently serves as the vice president of the African American Student Union at Georgia Tech.
Our Vendor Showcase spotlighted eight local Black-owned businesses, providing a fantastic opportunity to network, enjoy refreshments, and support our community while celebrating Black excellence and creativity.

The College of Engineering’s Staff Opportunities to Accelerate Readiness (SOAR) program will launch its second cohort in April for the 2024-25 academic year.
SOAR is focused on enhancing the professional development of the College’s staff through enrichment, education, and empowerment. The program will help you obtain the skills you need for your desired career path. We want to promote growth from entry-level to senior-leader positions and value longevity among the College’s staff.

At the Expo, more than 1,200 students in engineering, sciences, public policy, and industrial design will showcase their innovative projects designed and built during their Senior/Capstone Design course. Projects range from solutions for real-world problems for industry partners and developing communities to ideas with real commercialization potential.
If you have industry or academic work experience, we would be thrilled to have you judge student teams at the Expo and help us decide who wins thousands of dollars in cash prizes. Register by April 15 to attend as a judge, which includes a chance to tour the Invention Studio makerspace.
