CDC Health Update:
Important Updates on Locally Acquired Malaria Cases Identified in Florida, Texas, and Maryland
August 28, 2023
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Health Update today to share new information about locally acquired malaria cases identified in the United States. This is an update to the CDC Health Advisory issued June 26, 2023. In brief:
  • A single case of locally acquired Plasmodium falciparum malaria has been identified in Maryland.
  • Florida has identified seven cases and Texas has identified one case of locally acquired Plasmodium vivax malaria. There have been no reports of local transmission of malaria in Florida or Texas since mid-July 2023.
  • In addition to routinely considering malaria as a cause of febrile illness among patients with a history of international travel to areas where malaria is transmitted, clinicians should consider a malaria diagnosis in any person with an unexplained cause of fever, regardless of their travel history.
  • Despite recent cases, the risk of locally acquired malaria remains very low in the United States.
Suspected or confirmed locally acquired malaria is a public health emergency and should be reported immediately.
