Senior Golfers Explore the First City
Senior Golfers visited historic St. Augustine in February and were impressed by the charm of our country's oldest city, with its rich history, interesting architecture, and beautiful golf courses. At the welcoming reception at Old City House Inn, established in the late 18th century, newcomers Abe Early, Denise Hook, Frankie Garber, Cindy Shearin, and Pete & Sharon Vanzant were welcomed into the group.
First day of group play was on King & Bear, the singular collaboration between the beloved legends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. Florida's weather turned cold on the following day, as the players took on Arthur Hills' Palencia Club, winding through centuries-old oaks and views of the Intracoastal Waterway. SGA members enjoyed the beautiful course and were cheerful and optimistic despite the chilly temperatures.
Winners at gross were Frankie Garber and Jim Harrenga. "This has been another great golf and social get-together," related Jim. "I could have had a home-field advantage here, as I lived in St. Augustine for four years back in the 90's. Actually, though, hitting my drive over the lake on 18 on Palencia was so exciting that I don't even know what I'm saying!"
Frankie also was delighted about her experience in St. Augustine. "I had a blast at this event," she told the group. "I enjoyed meeting new people and fellow golfers, and SGA took the stress out of planning the trip for me. Catherine and Cynthia are very accommodating and great at getting things done. Thank you, everyone. I look forward to coming back with you soon!"
Net winners were Kim Comstock and Pete Vanzant. Best Ball Winners were Jean Elrick and Jane & Jim Harrenga. Second Place team was Catherine Powell, Dale Moulton, and Mary Tebben. Close to pin prizes went to Frankie Garber, Jim Harrenga and Pete Vanzant. Daily Net Winners were Jane Harrenga and Dale Moulton. Congratulations and best wishes to all!
