Bringing Emerging Technologies to the Classroom |
As Swarthmore’s Emerging Technologies Fellow, Liz Hogrefe builds on her educational research experience and works to expand opportunities to integrate emerging technologies into library and classroom learning. Watch for opportunities to participate in a workshop with Liz to learn and grow your digital skills, from using 3D modeling software to create story maps to learning 3D scanning. Liz hopes to demonstrate that the barriers to learning these tools are low, and the research possibilities vast.

Libraries’ Opportunities Offer Professional Growth
in Plain Sight |

| RIAs' World is a regular column written by one of our Research & Information Ambassadors (RIAs). The RIAs are student library-workers who are here to help their fellow students learn about exciting library resources. This month’s column is by Ethan Liang '26.

The Libraries are one of the biggest employers of students on campus, and I’m proud to have worked in several Libraries roles. Akin to how some students belong to labs where they gain a specific skillset with physical results, I like to think of my library and special collections work as a way to bring my studies in history and Asian American studies to life.
As a RIA in particular, I’ve gotten to hone the art of tapping into community members’ interests. A given interaction might involve eliciting details about a field of interest while probing through our catalogs. On a more macro level, it’s thinking about the best framing of events, and the webs of outreach that get people to engage, what draws their curiosity. Additionally, thanks to my work on the information end, I’ve become a better researcher, both in terms of the technical navigation of databases as well as the conceptual side of considering how information and ideas get organized.

Read in Community, Start at the Libraries |
This year, the Faculty-Staff Book Group theme is "Philadelphia" (past themes have included climate, food, work, and science fiction). You can find a full list of the Philly-centric books folks are reading below, along with links to order copies through the library. Dozens of people are participating in the program, and there’s even a waitlist. If you were not able to participate this year, or if the College program sparked your love for book groups, you can start a book club of your own, and the Libraries can help. Read the full story for some ways to get started.

By the Book: Kathryn Melvin |
Kathryn Melvin has been at Swarthmore since spring 2022 and currently works as the Student and Scholar Immigration Specialist in the International Student Center. Reading is one of Kathryn's most favorite things to do, ever since she learned how as a child. Kathryn can while away uninterrupted hours with an engaging book, becoming fully immersed in a literary world.
What are you reading these days?
For one of my book groups, I am currently reading Algospeak by Adam Aleksic and for the other I'm about to start Weyward by Emilia Hart.
