Dear Members of the Grand Valley Community,
As spring begins to emerge, it offers a moment for reflection on the importance of our shared work with and for our students and community. Higher education across the country is undergoing profound structural change. Demographic shifts, evolving workforce demands, rising costs, and changing expectations about the value of a degree are reshaping the landscape in which universities operate. These are not temporary headwinds; they are long-term transformations that call for thoughtful adaptation and bold leadership. Grand Valley is fortunate to be in a strong position to meet this moment.
In times like these, it is both natural and necessary to ask hard questions about direction and priorities. I appreciate the many faculty and staff who have engaged thoughtfully and constructively in these conversations at GVSU. Together, many of us, faculty, staff and students, have participated in authentic, shared governance-led discussions as we shape and refine our plans for the future. From these conversations, key insights and recommendations have emerged informing and influencing our direction. In addition, I am excited about the many new opportunities for learning and dialogue that have been created, including open forums around research, budget and other focused discussions, all designed to deepen understanding of the decisions before us. These conversations matter and make authentic consultation available to those who choose to participate. These opportunities will continue as we advance our Board-approved strategy, Reach Higher Together.
I believe that the primary question before us now is how an institution built for one era evolves to serve the next. I believe it is our sacred obligation to ask this question. Grand Valley has faced such moments before. For example, we expanded and strengthened the liberal arts at our institution, invested in the downtown Grand Rapids campus, opened professional colleges, and every time we acted, we aligned our work with the needs of our state and in service to the future.
Blue Dot, recently approved by our Board of Trustees, should be understood within this broader context. It is not simply a building project. It represents an investment in the intellectual and technological infrastructure required for Michigan to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Just as previous generations invested in highways, hospitals, and research laboratories to power economic and societal progress, our generation must invest in digital literacy, data science, and human-centered innovation. Blue Dot is designed to bring disciplines together, strengthen collaboration across and outside the university, and prepare our students to lead in a world where technology and every field of human endeavor are increasingly interconnected.
Today, student needs are evolving faster than ever before and in the face of constraints unlike those we have seen before. Our responsibility is to ensure that a GVSU education provides lifelong value and catalyzes state wellbeing. That means cultivating digital fluency, disciplinary expertise, and career readiness alongside the enduring skills that define a liberal education. It is in this way that we can strongly stand in the face of massive world shifts. The integration of these intersecting dimensions is what makes a Grand Valley education distinctive and powerful.
The decisions before us, like those of the past, are consequential and deserve careful scrutiny. They carry financial implications, but they do not place our university at risk. Our responsibility is not to preserve Grand Valley exactly as it was, nor to treat it solely as a business enterprise. Our call is to ensure that Grand Valley remains a place of learning, discovery, and service—one that equips students for employment, global citizenship, and leadership in a rapidly changing world and contributes meaningfully to the prosperity of our region.
I am confident in this community’s ability to meet this moment. The strength of Grand Valley has always resided in its people; our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners who believe deeply in the power of education to transform lives and communities. Together, we will continue the work of honoring our mission while investing boldly in the future.
With respect and resolve,
Philly Mantella
