Nick Fang, UTA's Robert S. Gooch Endowed Professor in civil engineering, testified at a joint hearing of the Texas Senate and House committees on disaster preparedness and flooding last week. Dr. Fang—a nationally recognized expert in hydrology and flood modeling—stressed that a successful flood warning system requires more than technology alone; it must also include sustained investment, human oversight, and public education. 

“Texas is big. We have very sophisticated terrains and different climatic zones,” he said. “We have to tailor the system for different zones—and universities like UTA are here to help with that."

Workers pave a stretch of highway.

In a first for Texas, Sahadat Hossain, director of the Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability and a professor of civil engineering, has partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation’s Dallas district to pave a stretch of highway using his innovative plastic-infused asphalt. Coastal region in a hurricane.

A UTA team is developing a multi-level, interdisciplinary hurricane damage mitigation model for homes along the Texas coast. The goal is to help homeowners and other stakeholders determine how best to retrofit houses to withstand damage from high winds, storm surge, and flooding caused by hurricanes.
