UNITED NATIONS

SWISS PRESIDENCY OF THE

UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

May 2023
Throughout the month of May 2023, Switzerland will hold the presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC). As the presidency of the UNSC rotates among its members, this presents a unique opportunity for Switzerland to place a special emphasis on its thematic priorities of building sustainable peace, proctecting civilians, addressing climate security, as well as enhancing the effectiveness of the Security Council. These priorities align with Switzerland's long-standing commitment to promoting international peace, security, and human rights
Switzerland's presidency of the Security Council also underscores the country's strong and enduring commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation.

On May 3, Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis chaired the first Swiss flagship event during the Swiss presidency of the UNSC: "Futureproofing Trust for Sustaining Peace." This event highlighted the Swiss priority of building sustainable peace through trust.

LITERATURE

BAY AREA BOOK FESTIVAL

HOSTED DOROTHEE ELMIGER

Swiss Consulate's Cultural and Public Diplomacy Officer Jale Yoldas met the award-winning Swiss author Dorothee Elmiger at the Bay Area Book Festival.
Dorothee Elmiger held an enriching discussion at Berkeley's Brower Center along with esteemed American journalist Jori Lewis. Together, they conducted a timely and thought-provoking conversation that delved into the profound and lasting impacts of slavery and the global sugar and peanut trade.

Dorothee Elmiger's latest work "Out of the Sugar Factory", is a powerful novel that has been recognized by both the German Book Prize and the Swiss Book Award.
Through the journey of the protagonist, who shares the author's name and who has an obsession for collecting objects relating to the sugar industry, the novel explores the violent history of the global sugar trade. Elmiger masterfully weaves historical fiction with personal introspection and creates an important space for dialogue about the lasting impacts of an often hidden history.
