Reflections - Club 29 and the Okla. City Bombing

by Jim Daniel - President 1994-95
I have been a member of the Rotary Club 29 of Oklahoma City for over forty years. Have also had perfect attendance during all those years. It was blessing to me to be elected president of the club in 1995 when the Murrah bombing took place on April 19, 1995 in Oklahoma City.

This was a tragic event with 168 people killed, and 680 injured. We all knew many of those people, and the last deceased person pulled out of the bombing was a lady I started working with at an Oklahoma City bank on the same day in 1962. She was a great lady and a great friend.

This event was tragic for all Oklahomans and to see all of our hearts joined together helped establish a miraculous unified caring event for all of the damages done and the many families who were desperately impacted.

Our Rotary Club 29 which was and still is one of the largest rotary clubs in the world did dramatic things to unite our hearts together and reach out to be an example of unified caring for all Oklahomans and people throughout the world.     READ MORE

Murrah Bombing Disaster Relief

In May of 1995, the Rotary Club 29 Foundation created a Disaster Relief fund to benefit the victims of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing.  Funds were received from as far away as Japan, Canada, Israel, Denmark, and Australia.  Not only did Rotarians and Rotary Clubs from around the world send donations but individuals made donations as well.
At the time, the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City had the only Rotary Club Foundation in the state other than Tulsa Rotary.  Rotary International directed all phone calls and funds to Club 29.
Jim Daniel was president of the Club and within minutes of the disaster, stepped forward with his leadership, dedication, and deep and persistent compassion for the victims and their families, led the Club's involvement in the Unmet Needs Committee of the OKC Community which brought money, manpower, and resources to a neutral table where all people in need had a case manager and most importantly, a source to avoid duplications.
The resource coordination committee was compromised of 16 churches, 8 service clubs, 17 non-profits, 3 government agencies, and 2 private foundations. Members of Club 29 that served on the Club 29 disaster committee were: Jim Daniel, Chair; Fred Morgan, Vice-Chair. Committee members: Larry Wagner, Carl Shortt, Rick Vermillion, Ed Porter, Dick Parker, Ed Leslie, Duane Thelen, Tony Caldwell, Bill Bowden, and Jerry Park.
