Undergraduate Research & Fellowships

Thank you to all who participated in Discovery Day!
We owe the magic of Discovery Day to our incredible participants—the dedicated student presenters, innovative faculty, and supportive graduate student research mentors who help us make an unforgettable day. But that's not all!
Behind the scenes, the Hodges Library staff ensures the collegiate space, the catering staff satisfies our taste buds, volunteers from the Division of Student Success and across campus help us throughout the day, and the URF team orchestrates the logistics. Together, we made this event a resounding success. Let's take a moment to appreciate the efforts of these unsung champions who turn undergraduate research goals.
Join the Review Board for Pursuit: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at the University of Tennessee
Every year, the University of Tennessee publishes a journal of undergraduate research. The beautifully curated journals are the product of readers working together to review and edit submissions. You can be a reader, too. Student reviewers learn valuable information about the publication process and how editing is performed; they also gain exposure to current research from their peers.
Fill out this form if you’re interested in joining. For questions, contact Sarah Lange at slange2@vols.utk.edu or Jack Duncan at jdunca65@vols.utk.edu.
Apply for a Paid Campus Research Assistant Position!
Interested in undergraduate research? Undergraduate Research & Fellowships offers the Faculty Research Assistants Funding (FRAF) program to support faculty members who plan to recruit (and pay!) undergraduate research assistants for the fall, spring, or summer terms. Student researchers earn an hourly pay rate, as determined by the department and in accordance with UT policy, up to $1,500/semester. Check for updates throughout the month as professors post available positions.
Search and apply for a FRAF research assistant position on Handshake. After logging in to Handshake (you can set up an account for free), go to “Employers” (left side of screen), and search “University of Tennessee, Office of Undergraduate Research & Fellowships.” You should see “Jobs at University of Tennessee, Office of Undergraduate Research & Fellowships” on the right side of the screen.
Speed Fellowships Advising on Pedestrian Walkway
Stop by to say “Hi” as URF participates in Vol Success Week (September 25 – 29) with yet another Speed Fellowships Advising on Pedestrian Walkway on Thursday, September 28, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. This is not an ordinary tabling event. We will literally bring the office to Ped Walkway to meet with students and get the word out about fellowships.
Interested in learning more about fellowships? Well, stop by “our office” on September 28 or submit an interest form on our website.
Become an Undergraduate Research Ambassador (URA)
URA, formerly URSA, works together to mentor and support current undergraduate researchers on campus. URA's next meeting will be October 4, 2023, at 4 p.m. in E102 Melrose Hall (located 1616 Melrose Avenue, near Hodges Library). URA meets on the first Wednesday of every month in the same location. Scan the GroupMe QR code or contact Sarah Lawrence at slawre19@vols.utk.edu with any questions.
Calling all Juniors: Public Service Fellowship is Now Open
Interested in a future in public policy, public administration, or international affairs? Apply for the Public Policy and International Affairs Program (PPIA)’s Junior Summer Institute (JSI)!
The JSI is a rigorous academic, fully funded summer fellowship program that prepares future leaders in the public service sector to obtain a master’s or a joint degree in a field related to public service. Fellowship recipients will have the opportunity to study over the summer at one of seven US college campuses including Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, and Harvard. Applications will remain open until November. To learn more, head to the PPIA website for more.
