REFLECTIONS

Stealing Struggles

by Dr. Freda Deskin
One of the most essential life lessons I have ever received came from my dear friend and long-time mentor, Alma Wilson, the first female Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

Justice Wilson was so well known that everyone referred to her as “Alma.” She was like Cher, the singer—just Alma. That is what she preferred being called. It was a term of endearment.

Alma was well-known for imparting her wisdom in simple, short phrases. Of the many that have stayed with me over the years, one stands out: “Don’t steal their struggle.”  Alma shared anecdotes about parents rescuing their children from consequences and what she had seen in her courtroom as a district judge. She described the revolving door of the courtroom where she say the same young people and their parents multiple times. The parents were always bailing them out -until they couldn’t. She explained similar situations where employers rescued employees.

Justice Wilson asked me whether I was the person I was because of my struggles. She said she certainly was. It didn't take me long to realize that I had my strengths as an adult and a leader because of my struggles. READ MORE

Rotary Club 29 in the Fight Against Malaria

by Mary Jane Calvey
Over Labor Day, Rotarians Clayton Taylor and Mary Jane Calvey joined Malaria Partners International(MPI) and members of several Washington State Rotary Clubs in Zimbabwe and Zambia in the global effort to eliminate Malaria.  This ongoing effort helps by educating and empowering Community Health workers.  Providing training, supplies, and sometimes bicycles to reach remote villages with messages of prevention, treatment, and cure malaria, MPI and Rotary hope to break the cycle of malaria illness and death.

Toy Collections in October at Meetings

During the month of October, our club will be collecting toy donations on behalf of Christmas Connection. Our board is excited to help support this community toy drive which will provide toys at no cost to 1,000 families this coming holiday season. While they gladly welcome any toy for children newborn up to 14, they are in most need of toys for 0-2 and 11-14. We’ll have a box available to receive those donations as you enter our meeting each week.

Nov. 5 - Bylaws Revision Vote

On November 5 at our weekly lunch meeting, a proposed bylaws revision will be put forth to the club for a vote. In completing an annual review to ensure our practices and bylaws are current, a small change is proposed to our existing bylaws as it relates to our election timeline. With our transition to a secure, online voting portal, results for the election are now made available immediately following the close of voting and results can be announced at the first meeting in December, without need to delay and count paper ballots. With that, our board has recommended the update of the language from “On or before the date of the first Rotary Club meeting following December 4th” to “On or before the date of the first Rotary Club meeting in December.”  This small change will allow our upcoming election results to be announced at our meeting on December 3rd without delay.
