 PRESIDENT MONTHLY UPDATE

Hello Christian,

Since last month's newsletter, AMA PDX has been busy rebuilding our chapter. This month, we joined other chapter leaders from around the country at the Western Regional Retreat in Las Vegas to connect and share best practices. Our VP of Communications, Christian Aniciete, represented Portland at the virtual 2023 Collegiate Summit. And of course, our VP of Agency, Corinne Gould is gearing up to roll out another year of serving our local, nonprofit community. Applications are live on our website!

We hope to see you at our upcoming event this month – virtual speed networking on 11/30/23! These virtual speed networking events were a hit during the pandemic and we're trying it out again to see if there is still interest from our community. Join us!

In case you missed it last month, will you take a moment to give us some valuable feedback on what kind of programming and activities you’d like to see from AMA PDX  this year?
I'm very grateful to be part of such a supportive community -- thank you for being a vital part of it too. I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

Cheers,
Kate

Building community

AMA's Western Regional Retreat took place this year in the fabulous city of Las Vegas on November 3-4. The purpose of this annual event is to bring chapter leaders together to sharpen their leadership skills, share best practices with one another, and strengthen their chapter operations. Last year, the Portland chapter was proud to host the Western Regional Retreat.

This year's Western Regional Retreat hosted chapter leaders across the West Coast including Hawaii, Las Vegas, San Diego, Puget Sound, and Sacramento Valley. The AMA PDX delegation included President Kate Ludgate, Past President Ashlan Glazier-Anderson, and VP of Communications, Christian Aniciete. A member of the AMA Professional Chapters Council, Ashlan helped organize this year's retreat and shared her wisdom and experience on topics such as "Building Board Resilience & Engagement" and "How your Chapter Grew through DEI-A." Ashlan shared, "It was an honor to pass along my knowledge as Past President and help develop the next generation of AMA Leaders." Go here to see photos from the Retreat

Honoring November as Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month recognizes the traditions, history, languages, stories, and invaluable contributions of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities. The federal designation was created in 1990 through a presidential proclamation and has since been recognized every November. Recognizing and paying tribute to Native Americans involves considering ways to foster inclusivity both in the workplace and in daily routines. IllumiNative highlights frequently used phrases that may harm Native peoples and should be avoided.
  • "Low man/person on the totem pole" –  Totem poles have spiritual significance in Native culture. The phrase minimizes its significance and is considered disrespectful out of context.
  • "Circle the wagon" – The phrase is rooted in Western expansion and the colonization of Native lands.
  • "Off the reservation" – References the forcible removal of Native people from their lands to reservations.
  • "Savage" – A word used by Western colonizers stereotyping Native peoples as violent.
  • "Spirit Animal" – A phrase that reinforces stereotypes of Native peoples and incorrect spiritual beliefs.
  • "PowWow" – A term often used to describe meetings but is considered to be an offensive appropriation of a term of great cultural importance to Indigenous Americans.
  • "Tribe" – Promotes misleading stereotypes and carries misleading historical and cultural assumptions, erasing the significance of Tribal sovereignty, identity, and people.
