Rotary Club of Oklahoma City

Dear Rotarian Friends:

Some GREAT NEWS!  Recall that our Rotary Public Health Safety Policy, adopted by the Board of Directors, as recommended by the ad hoc Rotary Public Health Safety Committee, states that when the 7-day rolling average in Oklahoma City falls below 250 new cases for at least 5 consecutive days, we are able to resume in-person meetings with a capped attendance of 50. We have now been consistently below this “gateway” limit for several days (as reported on the OCCHD website).  THEREFORE ON MARCH 2 WE WILL ONCE AGAIN WELCOME ROTARIANS TO ST. LUKES FOR LUNCH.  In fact if this trend continues for another few days we will likely move the in-person attendance cap to 75 for the March 9th meeting.  Dust off those Rotary Tuesday Cloths and join us.

So….it turns out that the light at the end of the tunnel was NOT the train.  Real progress is finally being made, vaccinations are getting in arms at an increasing rate and sadly so many of us have been infected that latent anti-bodies are present in a significant portion of the population.  While the UK variant is expected to be the predominant infection in March, causing some challenges in the slowdown of the transmission, your safety committee, the Board and your officers and staff believe it is finally safe enough to resume limited in person attendance at Rotary Oklahoma City.  As is customary in my faith tradition we would say, “THANK YOU JESUS”!

Your patience has allowed your Board and Officers to approach this once in a lifetime health threat with only our members safety in mind.  It will be so good to be able to have a responsive audience again and to see our friends and colleagues.  We are also mindful that this is not over, that people lay struggling for life with this disease in our hospitals including a wonderful friend of mine.  We have all lost someone that we know, our Rotary Club has lost members….but now is the time to cautiously and safely start again.

We will continue to offer live stream broadcast of our meetings and you will be asked to continue to wear masks and socially distant.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Mercy Ships: Opening Health Opportunities for All
A Rotary project becomes a passion to support healthcare in Africa

Like many things I have discovered in life, one phone call, opening one door, asking one question, or reading one email can lead you somewhere you never thought you’d be.  That is how I learned about a project that has since become a passion for me.  That project is Mercy Ships.

Founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships seeks to transform individuals, communities, and nations by using hospital ships to deliver free world-class healthcare services to people in need.  These services include training and educating local healthcare providers and doctors and nurses as well as providing a wide range of surgeries and follow-up care for sustainable development.

Mercy Ships has worked in more than 55 developing countries, providing services valued at more than $1.65 billion, and treating more than 2.8 million people with just one ship.  The ship is crewed by volunteers from over 50 nations, averaging 1,300 volunteers each year.  Professionals ranging from surgeons, dentists, and nurses to cooks, engineers, teachers and cleaning crews donate their time and skills.
