There are lots of great questions and curiosities about the SOUL position and application process. Check out answers to the most frequently asked questions:
Q: Do I have to have an outgoing personality to be a SOUL?
A: There is no one specific personality that a SOUL should possess. The SOUL team consists of students with a variety of different interests, backgrounds, identities, and leadership styles. The spring semester sprint course, mentorship program, and training will give you all the resources you need to be a SOUL!
Q: Can I apply to the SOUL position if I am also interested in pursuing other things?
A: Yes, you can still apply to the SOUL position even if you are unsure of your availability. SOULs cannot participate in things that interfere with work responsibilities, such as summer courses or other jobs and internships that take place in May and June. We encourage you to maximize your options. You always have the option to withdraw your application during the selection process. No matter what, you will get experience in application and interview processes.
Q: How should I approach the short-answer questions on the SOUL application?
A: Respond in a way that is honest and thoughtful. The questions provide an opportunity for you to share more about yourself and the values and experiences that have shaped you. Your Miami experience doesn't need to be incorporated into every response if that does not feel authentic to you (unless the question asks about Miami specifically!). It’s recommended that you work on your responses to the questions in a separate document before submitting the online application.
Q: What is the spring semester sprint course that SOULs take?
A: SOULs participate in EDL 290F: The Nature of Group Leadership for SOULs, a 2-credit graded sprint course in the spring semester. This course meets every Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. starting on March 9, and is instructed by Liz Walsh, Director of Orientation and Transition Programs. The course explores group leadership in the SOUL context. It's also where SOULs start developing the team dynamic and exploring their personal leadership styles.
Q: Do SOULs live on-campus over the summer?
A: Yes, SOULs live on-campus during fall semester orientation. The SOUL team lives together in the same residence hall, which adds another unique element to the team dynamic. Housing and a partial meal plan are provided for SOULs during the full-time work period in May and June.
