Tulane University

Dear Tulane community member,

We are writing to inform you that a case of viral meningitis has been confirmed in a member of our university community on the uptown campus. The individual is receiving medical treatment, and we are working closely with local and state public health officials to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of our campus.

Unlike bacterial meningitis, this type of infection is caused by a virus. While the severity of the illness can vary from person to person, viral meningitis is typically mild, resolves on its own, and is not considered highly contagious.

Common symptoms include sudden fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, confusion, and sensitivity to light. If you experience any of these symptoms, we urge you to seek immediate medical attention.

Out of an abundance of caution, the university is taking the following steps:

  • The affected individual's close contacts have been identified and notified.
  • Increased sanitation measures are being implemented in high-traffic areas where the affected individual has been lately.
  • Campus Health is available for consultation and evaluation.

We encourage everyone to:

  • Practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing and not sharing food, drinks, or personal items.
  • Stay up to date on vaccinations, including the meningococcal vaccine.
  • Contact Campus Health if you have questions or concerns.

Please know that the health and safety of our community remains our top priority. We will continue to share updates as appropriate.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Caesar C. Ross III, DHA, MPA
Assistant Vice President, Campus Health and Wellness
