Six days. Seventy-five river miles. Two-hundred and fifty years honored.
That’s the basis of the Epic Allegheny Odyssey, a once-in-a-generation journey down the Wild and Scenic Allegheny River to celebrate the significant role the waterway and western Pennsylvania have played in our nation’s and state’s history.
Festivities kick off Sunday, July 26 with a celebration in Warren. The following morning, paddlers will launch from Crescent Park in Warren and spend the next six days traveling downriver to Emlenton. Along the way, paddlers will pass historic river towns, beautiful landscapes, and a wealth of American and indigenous history.
Funded in part through a mini-grant from the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers, this epic sojourn is led by the Oil Region Alliance of Business, Industry & Tourism, which also manages the Oil Region National Heritage Area.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources supports river sojourn mini-grants with funding from the Environmental Stewardship Fund.
Registration is still open to take part in this expedition that is sure to leave a legacy through its powerful storytelling, a commemorative book, and unforgettable experiences.

Celebrating 10 Million Trees Planted in Pennsylvania |
|
|
|
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) recently joined the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to celebrate planting the 10 millionth tree of the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership.
The partnership launched in spring 2018 and brings together national, regional, state, and local agencies, conservation organizations, outdoor enthusiasts, businesses, and residents.
The ceremonial tree was planted in Schaffner Park in Dauphin County.
“Planting the 10 millionth tree is a powerful reminder of what Pennsylvanians can accomplish when we work together for clean water and healthy communities,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “Since 2018, this effort has transformed landscapes across the Commonwealth, strengthened our streams, and expanded the forests that protect our drinking water and support wildlife.”

The 10 Million Trees Partnership represents part of Pennsylvania’s effort to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay, which is fed in large part by Pennsylvania rivers.
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science has reported that the Chesapeake Bay is in its healthiest condition in more than 20 years.
Pennsylvanians can support tree planting efforts by donating to the Keystone Tree Fund through an online form or a voluntary $3 check-off on driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. The fund supports grants for community tree plantings and streamside buffers.
