July New Charts Feature Music from Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, & John La Barbera
-------------------------------------------------------------
Plus New Releases from Alfred Publishing & Kendor Music
We hope that everyone is enjoying summer! We are already preparing to offer a great selection of new & recently-published arrangements for the new school year. Our next newsletter in mid-August will be focused on back-to-school with listings of recommendations, but we already have some new items highly useful for the fall semester, so let's get started.
First off is another from one of Jazz Lines Publications' foundational figures, the First Lady of Song, Miss Fitzgerald. We present Buddy Bregman's arrangement of the Cole Porter classic 'Begin the Beguine.' Like all of Mr. Bregman's arrangements for these Porter Song Book sessions, this chart makes the wise decision to keep things simple in order to stay out of the way of Fitzgerald’s peerless vocals while still maintaining the appropriate sense of support behind her. Upcoming in the next month will be: 'I Love Paris', 'I Concentrate on You', and 'All of You' - all from her Cole Porter Song Book album.
Our latest from Tony Bennett is Robert Farnon's arrangement of 'Winter Wonderland'. This holiday favorite was recorded in 1968. Farnon's magical score provides a lush background for your vocalist. There is a four bar cameo tenor saxophone solo, but it is otherwise a vocal feature.
From the Glenn Miller Orchestra we have 'A String of Carols'. This delightful holiday medley was penned by Dave Wolpe & appeared on the album In the Nutcracker Mood. Tunes include: 'Here We Come A-Caroling', 'Up on the House Top', 'A Child Is Born in Bethlehem', & 'Deck the Hall'. If your programming time or budget allows for only one holiday chart representing the sound of one of America's all-time most beloved bands, this is the one.
New from our Walrus Music Publishing & our friend John La Barbera are three charts from his 2023 Grooveyard album: 'K's Delight', 'Mandatory Blues', & 'My New Summer Samba'. These are challenging charts in various styles recorded by an excellent group of musicians, including John's brothers Pat on saxes & Joe on drums.
Everything above was prepared in our usual manner, using original scores and/or parts from the recording sessions.
New Specially-Priced Multi-Chart Sets: We have a few great new entries in our popular Specially-Priced Multi-Chart Sets category.
First off, a set of music arranged by Quincy Jones. This set is a valuable, important, & interesting look at some of the earlier work of one of one of America's greatest musical minds. This set of charts includes music written for Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, & Quincy's own bands, as well as the Pepe Lienhard Orchestra.
Also, we have a set from the Count Basie Orchestra as arranged by Billy Byers.
Finally, we have a set of Freddie Hubbard compositions arranged for jazz ensemble. Hubbard was a composer of standards as well as a magnificent player, & we have a roster of charts here from some excellent arrangers, presenting his music in various styles & difficulty levels.
Recent Highlights: We'd like to once again mention a series of charts that we feel are among the best new items released in years. These are the nine arrangements from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra's The Music of Wayne Shorter project. We will again defer to the eloquence of Mr. Christian McBride in describing these charts: "Wayne's music has become basic instrumental vocabulary for all of us who came after him. For anyone wishing to play jazz, it is a must that you come through the music of Ellington, Monk, & Shorter. Much of Wayne’s music is architecturally perfect in terms of its harmonic and melodic structure. The JLCO does a remarkable job of creatively arranging Wayne's music while keeping a watchful eye on the core structure of these songs."

Alfred Publishing 2024 New Issues Kendor Music Summer 2024 New Issues

The Latest from

Alfred & Kendor

Alfred Publishing's 2024 new issues are new takes on classic standards & brand new compositions from some of today's finest arrangers. From the latter we have new music from Gordon Goodwin & Alan Baylock, two of today's best. From Mr. Goodwin we have 'Terminally Hip', a clever, swinging treatment of a catchy tune. From Mr. Baylock we have 'The Upsweep,' a very funky rock chart with a driving groove. There's also a new take on the timeless 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot' from our friend Rick Hirsch. Please click here to view them all.
Kendor Music's summer 2024 new issues include great new music from Ellen Rowe, Kris Berg, Greg Yasinistky, & more. Ellen's medium level new take on the Gershwins's 'Someone to Watch Over Me' seems like the potential highlight here. The arrangement moves from a straight eighth note feel to a jazz waltz before melting into a lovely Bossa. Please also check out Kris's new one, 'Mind Over Matters', a masterful job of making a contemporary jazz composition playable by younger groups. There's also new music from Jeff Jarvis, Terry White, Peter Blair, and Vince Gassi; please click here to view them all.
