Dear CC Community,

This fall, Colorado College is putting our data governance framework into practice. This work builds on efforts started this spring to establish shared expectations for how institutional data is defined, created, maintained, accessed, protected, and used—a need further elevated in the College's recent Institutional Review report.

Data touches nearly every part of our work at Colorado College. It helps us understand our students and community, meet institutional and regulatory responsibilities, make decisions, allocate resources, evaluate programs, and tell the story of the College.

Because our work is interconnected, our data is interconnected too. A data issue that appears to belong to one team, division, or system rarely stays there. Information created in one place may later be used by many others for advising, reporting, budgeting, planning, accreditation, communications, or problem-solving.

Ultimately, the success of this work depends on each of us.

Over the coming months, parts of the College's data governance program will become more visible across campus, including data role notifications and the work of the Data Governance Strategic Board and Tactical Working Group.

Your vice president or dean will notify you of the data role or roles you hold within the new data governance framework. These roles are not a new job assignment. Rather, they are intended to make existing responsibilities more visible and clarify expectations for the institutional data you engage with as part of your work on behalf of the College. Your leader will be able to explain what the role means in the context of your division's efforts.

Visit the Data Governance website to learn more about this work and the groups guiding it. The website will be updated on a rolling basis as additional information becomes available, including details about data roles, timelines for administrative and academic areas, and support available to employees.

We will continue to share updates as this work moves forward. Questions about your division's data roles are best directed to your divisional lead. General questions about the data governance efforts can be sent to Erica Shafer, Data Strategist, at eshafer@coloradocollege.edu.

Sincerely,

Khaleel Gathers

Vice President of Information Technology
