Tulane University

Dear Tulane Community:

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the campus environment and experience, we are pleased to announce a new initiative to create a unified central green space in the heart of the uptown campus—while also strengthening our stormwater management system.

The Unified Green project will seamlessly connect two of the campus’s most cherished outdoor spaces: Newcomb Quad and Berger Family Lawn. This expanded green space will provide more room for walking, gathering, and relaxing beneath the oak canopy. As the fourth and final phase of a multi-year initiative to enhance the pedestrian and overall campus experience, Unified Green will include flexible seating and event-friendly areas. These features are designed to promote a more vibrant and connected campus community, as outlined in the master plan developed 10 years ago. That same plan also delivered many completed projects like the Commons, Paul Hall, and River and Lake Residential Halls.

In addition to its aesthetic and community benefits, the project will significantly enhance stormwater mitigation. An underground detention system—capable of holding up to 440,000 gallons of water (roughly the size of an eight-lane college swimming pool)—will temporarily store and gradually release stormwater into the city’s drainage system. This improvement will help reduce strain on local infrastructure during heavy rain events and lower the risk of localized flooding.

Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 20, 2026, with completion anticipated in spring 2027.

During construction, there will be impacts to transportation routes, parking availability, and nearby operations. As part of our continued efforts to address parking availability concerns, individuals who normally park between Newcomb and the Berger Family Lawn should contact parking services for alternative options if they encounter any difficulties parking on campus.

For more information on this and other details, please visit the Unified Green webpage.

Thank you for your patience as we undertake this important project. We look forward to delivering a space that will enrich the Tulane experience and foster greater connection across our community.

Thank you,

Robin Forman, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
Patrick Norton, Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer/Treasurer
