Greetings from the University Staff Advisory Council!

November Meeting Highlights

  • Kenny Moore, former USAC president and Director of the Vanderbilt Recreation Center, joined us to share updates on staff access to the fitness facilities. With a 15,000 square foot state of the art fitness center, employees can sign-up for a $35 monthly membership. Memberships include group fitness classes, racquet ball, squash, and basketball courts, a second floor track, climbing wall and much more. If you are interested in seeing the facility, you can reach out to Kenny and team directly.

  • Sleep matters! Dr. Beth Malow shared timely information around the impact of sleep on our health and well-being. Research has recommended that seven hours of sleep each night is needed to promote optimal health. Recently, Dr. Malow published an article advocating to abolish the clock change and adopt permanent standard time. Her article notes that adopting permanent standard time provides positive benefits to our health, sleep, and circadian biology. While you can work on self-improving your sleep habits, you can also call 615-936-0060 for referrals to the Vanderbilt Sleep Clinic.

  • Megan Macon, Director of Career Development for Vanderbilt Next Steps talked about how the program provides college access to students with disabilities. As the first program in the state of Tennessee, and one of 300 other programs across the US, Next Steps students participate in academics, job shadowing experiences, internships, and seek full-time employment opportunities. If your office is interested in hosting a Next Steps student, please reach out to Megan!

  • Employee Affinity Groups, supported by the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, are employee-led and facilitated groups formed around interests, backgrounds, identities, and common bonds. Wendy Yu, Associate Program Manager, shared details of four of the ten current groups including: Asian American Pacific Islander, Disabilities and Chronic Health Conditions, International, and Military and Veterans. Additionally, two new EAGs were launched: Mid-career Professionals and Women and Working Moms.

Open calls for new EAGs will take place in the summer, if you have questions about EAGs contact: eag@vanderbilt.edu
